Summary
When Leon finally wakes, the first thing he feels is the warmth in his veins.
It’s a stark contrast to the pain he felt the day before, the near constant state of distress during his most recent mission leaving him exhausted and bruised. He had almost forgotten that he wasn’t in his twenties anymore, unable to withstand the brunt of the physical burdens that come with his line of work like he used to, even though he is much stronger now than he was then. His body just doesn’t heal as well or as quickly as it once had. It probably never will again.
But even though that may be the case, it is not the aftermath which he finds himself thinking about. He just doesn’t think that any of what happened in the previous days matters half as much as this.
Nothing does.

The ache in Grace’s side worsens with every step down the long hallway, warmth pooling in the material of her shirt and soaking it with the promise of death. Whatever supplies she had made useful simply weren’t enough to hold her together for long, only buying her just enough time to make it out of this terrible place before it went up in flames. She still doesn’t know if she’s going to make it.

After Raccoon City, it was as if it was the only thing that kept him going. Anger at what happened. Anger at himself. Anger at all of the things he wasn’t able to change and probably still couldn’t even if he could somehow go back.

Ada doesn’t say anything to that at first, letting her thumbs stroke his skin until she’s tracing that old bullet hole the same way she always seems to do. Her response comes like a confession. “I think we need to retire.”
Leon tips his chin in agreement, jutting his brows as his eyes find the foggy door. “Yeah. But I don’t know what I would do even if I could. I’m not made for that quiet life, you know? Not anymore.”
“You could be,” she replies, soft and curious.

She knew she was running out of time to get to this place, loose end after loose end tying her up in knots and inevitably throwing her into a dead one. But as far as she had been concerned, everything seemed to be under control for the most part. Leon was doing his job, just as well as he always had, sending the undead back to their graves for good this time and putting all of his energy into tracking down Victor. Grace, despite being full of fear, was doing her best to help in whatever way she could.
But something must have happened in between her last encounter with Leon and this one, because he did not look like this an hour ago.
