HJ doesn’t make LaVonte sign a contract when he turns him.
They’re on coke, because of course they’re on coke, and they’re also on the Golden Gate Bridge, miles and miles above rushing water. That wouldn’t mean anything to LaVonte, not yet. HJ just likes the sick feeling it gives him, knowing he can’t cross it. Likes that pushback. Something he can’t control.
He’s patient about it – so patient. Hundreds of years of patience. Eventually, humanity will carve out some new route, or dam upstream, and HJ will have this too.

Edwin stands and makes his way to his bookshelves. “Would you like to read something a bit more cheerful?”
“Yes, please,” Crystal says, truthfully, and extends her hands for the heavy tome that he gives her.
They sit in silence together for another few moments, and then - “What the fuck, Edwin, in what world is ‘A Dissertation on Modern Age Poisons’ ‘more cheerful’?”

Far is a new term for them. They didn’t really have too far, before, which Charles supposes is because he assumed they were already as far as they could go. He’d given up his own personal forever for Edwin, back when he only knew him as the lonely spirit who’d said he wasn’t good with people, even after he’d spent an entire night comforting a complete stranger.
They’d talked about it, after.
I had forever, Edwin had told him, smiling ruefully. You only had a few hours. What is that compared with an eternity?
I want that eternity, Charles hadn’t said. Those “few hours” convinced me to sacrifice a lot, Charles hadn’t said. Thirty years convinced me to sacrifice everything, Charles hadn’t said. Everything but being with you.

Theo likes to make excuses so that he’ll take a hit first, so that he can see that glassy-eyed gleam while he himself remains temporarily sober, when Boris is less likely to ask him what he’s looking at.
“Are you high at work?”
There’s a long, considering, pause. Boris blinks at him. “Kind of stupid question is that? I have been high at work many times, yes?”
“Well, yeah.” Theo rolls his eyes, shifting to lean against the doorway. “But like. Sharing is caring.”

Because if Will were a girl, they wouldn’t be having this conversation at all. If Will were a girl, he wouldn’t be asking questions about how to ask a guy out, because he and Mike would already be dating.
