criminal law is the punishment the state inflicts upon someone who violates its rules. contrastingly, tort law covers civil wrongs between two individuals, and seeks to provide remedies for the harm one individual inflicts upon another. these two are not mutually exclusive; in cases of, nonexhaustively, assault, battery or gross negligent manslaughter, you may see a criminal case and a concurrent tort case.
