“You keep saving me.” She wills her voice to stay steady, but the words crack at the end. “Why?”
She sees the hesitation before she hears it.
So’lek swallows thickly. “You are Sarentu.”
Her jaw tightens. “Is that what you told the others?”
His throat works against him. But he pushes through it anyway. “Yes.”
She looks away. “I’m not them.”
“I know,” he says.
“Then why did you?” she asks quietly.
So’lek averts his eyes to the ground, to the bow in his hands. He doesn’t look at her. And that hurts worse than the ache in her ribs. Doesn’t say anything for a long time.
A muscle in his throat jumps.
He keeps his tone neutral. “You already know why.”
She shakes her head, thumbing chipped paint off her forefinger. “Tell me anyway.”
“When they took you, they also took a piece of me I didn’t know I had left,” he says, like it’s sacred.
“I could not protect you. I failed you,” he continues. Plucks the string of his bow when her eyes are too much for him to handle.
“I don’t blame you,” she whispers.
“I do.” He sighs, abashed. “That is enough.”

The war had ended. Peace spread as the remnants of the RDA fled the Western Frontier, only leaving behind scraps of metal. Pandora began to heal, stitching the wounds of time closed with root and vine. Life moved forward. The Resistance turned its focus back to Ewya's world. Alma returned to her body. Ri'nela learned the weight of a tsahìk's voice. Teylan shaped metal into something meant to protect, rather than destroy.
Yet, Tamtey did not find peace.
Sleep brought memories of TAP that drove her from her bed night after night. Only the wind beneath unfamiliar stars eased the ache. She was rarely alone for long. So'lek always found her there. They shared the quiet until dawn, trading dreams and the horrors that kept them awake. Still, the forest trembled. Ewya's song wavered, strained by something distant - only drawing closer. Smoke stained the horizon. Thin and gray, whispering against the clouds.
A flake of ash drifted down, landing on Tamtey's knee. So'lek brushed it away, pinching it until it vanished.
"Ash..." he murmured.
"And fire," Tamtey replied, her voice unwavering.
The forest fell silent around them. Even the animals did not cry out.
A new enemy was coming.

The fire of hate only leaves the ashes of grief. Tamtey knew that all too well. The loss of many of her people and her mother shaped her childhood and early teen years. She became a hunter, a great warrior, trained to protect her once peaceful people. The time of sorrow was supposed to be over, they needed to heal and to move on now, but the arrival of an outsider changed everything. The Sarentu's painfully earned peace wasn't as strong as they thought, and the time to fight had come once again.

Alternative universe in which the Sarentu clan survived, the Sarentu children never experienced TAP, and Tamtey and So'lek met like Neytiri and Jake did in the first movie.

Summary
The RDA cheated Tamtey out of many things - her family, her clan, her heritage, her childhood. They cheated So'lek, too, who had a taste of how sweet life on Pandora could be, before it was stolen. Killed. Both are brutally broken people, collateral in the RDA's insatiable lust for destruction and resource extraction. Parts leftover from the needless hunt of human greed. Now both weapons for the resistance, neither can rest while the Skypeople remain on Pandora, neither feels entitled to any sort of life outside of their duty to avenge.
...But couldn't rebuilding be vengeance? Couldn't living well? Wouldn't it be nice to be happy? Who deserves that more than Death on Wings and The Dogtag Warrior? Who better to deserve freedom and happiness than the two people on all of Pandora who think they deserve it the least?
Retellings of scenes between Tamtey and So'lek in the canonical story, given noncanonical inner monologues, intentions, and motivations. All major story plot points remain the same, but details about Tamtey and So'lek's interactions and relationships to each other and the other characters will be tweaked and changed.

Whatever this warmth is, sitting low in her chest, the ease of his presence that loosens her jaw and shoulders, she can’t decide. Fear is her constant companion, but this, this feels safe. And somehow, that chance of safety is a pill she can’t quite swallow.

He exhales through his nose, slow and controlled. “You are fighting the name.”
“Am not!” I protest, waving my hands as I search for an excuse. “It’s just… hard to say.”
“It is gentle,” he says evenly. Then, after a beat, “You are not.”
