Summary
The night before the story comes to its destined conclusion, he drifts alone in the river of death, silhouette melting into the black water, a shadow of the end. In the distant horizon of the night, a figure cladded in gold slowly disappears from his sight, making the hero’s way back to the living shore. He follows the hero with his eyes, not daring to approach that light in the darkness, unwilling to let the hero see him, in this lull of peaceful death.
It is not time yet, he tells himself, sword faltering. It is not time yet, he tells himself, mask shivering. The shining king deserves nothing but the grandest death, the most heroic death, locking sword against the villain in the finale.
What does it mean to be a hero?

One day, Yingxing drifted off under a tree and dreamt a very long dream.
In the dream, he was but a lone traveler, climbing up his way to the top of the mountain peak. It was a very tall mountain. Morbidly, he tried to look down beyond the cliff side and envisage an end point to this realm of the immortals, but all he could perceive was a sea of clouds. Engulfed in mist and swallowed by clouds, the immortals and their mountain forever languished in lost time. For some reasons, he could not recall what the mountain’s name was, the knowledge slipping away from his mind like smoke, though he was sure it was once dear to him. Osmanthus blossoms lined the rock path, falling gently in front of his eyes, submerging him in their ancient fragrance. Black hair came unbound, freed from its confine with the wind. The scent of flowers was overpowering, yet it somehow fit the story just so.
An unknown song of a time long past whispered to him: Maybe the top of the mountain was a palace of a Dragon after all.Written for Secret Santa Lore Discord 2024, for Pho. Merry Christmas. :)
