When he couldn’t get the words out, Doc frowned but not unkindly as he gently placed the box down. “Son,” that nickname had certainly taken Lightning some time to get used to. Even now, it made him feel fuzzy; the warmth that bloomed each time Doc used it gave Lightning a sense of belonging, “if you don’t want to talk about it, that’s okay.”
“No, no, it’s fine, it’s just,” he bit his lip, worked the skin between his teeth before finally admitting the truth, albeit very quietly, “my mom’s ashes are in there.”
