Summary
Scar is pretty sure his new neighbour is a vampire.
Look, he only comes out at night, avoids garlic like it personally offended him (Scar’s pretty sure at least, he has never seen the dude eat any), and reacts to basic conversation like it is life or death. Overall, his neighbour is suspicious.
So, naturally, Scar decides to investigate.
This is a great idea. Nothing could go wrong with Scar’s plan.
Unfortunately, the more time he spends with Mumbo, the harder it becomes to focus on the mystery that is Mumbo, because it turns out his extremely suspicious neighbour is also very awkward and careful in a way that almost feels deliberate, and quickly is becoming someone that Scar doesn’t really want to stay away from… even if he is a vampire.
Meanwhile, Mumbo is just trying (and very clearly failing) to act like a normal person and not panic every time Scar tries to talk to him.

Anger burned through his chest in a way that only he could elicit. It clawed up his throat and charred his tongue, ash crunching between his grinding teeth. The only grounding activity he could manage to avoid the hatred that threatened to spill from his lips.
Across the dim classroom, there he sat. Silent yet the centre of everyone’s attention. Eyes drifted to him naturely, like moths to the brightest light he had ever seen. Unfortunately, Grian was being blinded, not enchanted. So effortless. So…

For years there has been a longstanding rivalry between Scar and Grian when surrounding academics, however this comes to an abrupt stop when a new student joins the school, somehow rising above both of them.

Summary
They slammed down hard. Scar ended up on top, his knee pinned Mumbo’s hips. His weight held him there. Silver stake in hand, raised, perfectly positioned.
Scar stared down at him, breath uneven, adrenaline roaring in his ears. Mumbo lay still beneath him, chest rising and falling, red eyes locked on Scar’s face.
Scar smiled; sharp, practiced, dangerous. “This is where you die, vampire.”
Mumbo slowly lifted one gloved hand and rested it against Scar’s cheek. His thumb brushed beneath Scar's eye, extremely gentle. “You’re beautiful like this.”

Vampires are cursed, not mindless monsters. But hunters don’t seem care about niceties.
When Scar -a well known vampire hunter- takes a contract, he expects a quick hunt and a clean kill this time. Instead, he finds Mumbo; a vampire who hesitates, a curse that isn’t so simple, and a chase that turns into something dangerously close to the one thing that was forbidden. He's been chasing the vampire for years, but slowly, Scar finds himself delaying the kill longer than he should. He has each time.
After all, some monsters want to be saved. And some hunters don’t want to finish the job.
Especially when love is the price.

Mumbo Jumbo just wants to help people in a way he knows how. It's just a shame that the government doesn't really agree with him.
