Summary
Leonard wins the kid in a hand of poker. A hand of poker he plays in the dirty back room of a dive bar in East Bumfuck, Iowa, two weeks after his humiliating divorce is finalized, and on the sixth day of a bourbon-fueled bender that’s somehow taken him from his high-rise loft in Atlanta to a fleabag motel in the middle of nowhere.

Summary
“What may I do for you, Sir Knight?”
“My name is Vanec, good smith. I would much rather leave the formality at court, if that does not offend you.”
Grieg nodded, approving.
“Most here call me Grieg,” he said. “I avoid court as much as I can."
“A sensible decision.” Vanec hefted a large canvas bag up into Grieg’s line of sight. “In here is my old breastplate. It took a hit a few weeks back and I would very much appreciate it if you could straighten it out for me.”

Summary
Behind the doors of the nearest broom closet, Alhaitham pins Kaveh against the hard edge of an overfull shelf and shamelessly scents him, rubbing his cheek against the smooth skin of Kaveh’s neck. Kaveh yelps in alarm, his cheeks flushing. He smells faintly sweet, like desert flowers, buried underneath all that ink and paper.
There’s been a small explosion in Ghandarva Ville, it’s some sage’s 50th birthday, Kshahrewar scholars are protesting outside the Akademiya for more money, and Alhaitham doesn’t give a shit. Kaveh is in heat. Alhaitham's responsible for him, and that duty supersedes everything else. The Matra can deal with the explosion, the Grand Sages can’t fire him anyway, and the other scholars can go to hell. Alhaitham has better things to do with his time.

Summary
it starts as a joke, as a lot of things do.
...but this isn't a joke anymore, is it? not with ghost whimpering like that. not while soap tugs on his lieutenant's hair and sees stars.
