Summary

He gets that opportunity when a foreign spaceship crashes into the outskirts of Deadwood, unleashing an unknown infection across Prime, turning anyone that comes in contact with it into a decaying shell of a human. After an attack from one of the infected, William has discovered that he’s immune to this new plague. While trying to stay safe from the calamitous apocalypse and balancing his untamed new spiritual abilities, he meets other survivors, Vyncent and Dakota, who not only help William survive the physical challenges of the apocalypse, but the mental ones of his past life too.

Wilson was good at rules.
He had avoided the obvious Abnormal Acts his whole life, for he had bound the impulses of his body with schedules, ethics committees, consent forms, and unspoken agreements. When his patients spoke, voices packed with grief and self-disgust, he understood immediately. He always did. Empathy came easily when it was someone else’s mess.
Wilson used to respond to their pleas: “We’ll get through this,” a guilty sort of kindness drenching his voice, and he would be called a saint, a martyr, the Boy Wonder Oncologist with sympathy for all.
What he did not tell them is that he had learned, young and thoroughly, how to punish a body for producing unauthorized thoughts. That he had broken himself into compliance often enough that the procedure felt routine.

"You're hurt," Mark mutters, tossing his keys into the empty fishbowl atop the shoe rack and shrugging off that coat he always wears.
"No, m'not."
"Yeah, you're just sittin' in here for shits and giggles at fifteen-til midnight?"
A tense, prolonged silence hangs in the air.
"That means it's eleven forty-five in the—"
"I know what fifteen-til means, asshole!" Dakota huffs.
Regardless of whether or not it's true, he didn’t know that it was almost midnight.
"Tell me what it is, kid. Broken rib? You've been sittin' weird, too."
Feeling his face flush with anger, Dakota mirrors the passive-aggressive body language. "I'm not sitting weird, man, fuck off! Go do—" He winces, feeling something sting from the shift in position. "Go do your supervillain-rehab shit. Leave me alone."
Mark huffs, and he thinks he's shaken free of the guy; pissed him off enough with the brief exchange that he'll give up and go away.
"If you're not hurt, then stand up."
