    Summary

“My king,” The knight lowered himself to his knees, hands trembling and white cloak pooling at his feet. He looked nervously around the room and spoke in little more than a whisper. “There’s… something in the dungeon.”

In which a child's wish and a whisper of blood-magic inadvertently resurrects a disgraced queen and her golden dragon beneath the Red Keep. [Baelor/Rhaenyra]

    Summary

It began with small, innocent touches that would paint his cheeks pink, but Baelor never noticed. How could he? The prince was generous and warm. He meant nothing by it, and it was Dunk who made it into an issue. It would have been easy to ignore, only that Duncan was also made to undress him, help him to his bath, and lift his naked boy from the copper tub, all while the tips of his ears flamed hotly and his eyes desperately looked anywhere but at the prince's bare body. He had a duty to care, to protect, and Duncan would see to it, even when Baelor's needs, brought by injuries that Duncan was to blame for, dragged him down an increasingly uncomfortable and strange path.

Duncan is asked to fulfill his vow to Prince Baelor as his caretaker at Ashford, while the Prince is recovering from his wounds. He slowly comes to find that the honour-bound relationship with his sworn liege Lord is not what he had innocently dreamed of once.

Faced with an impossible situation in Summerhall, Lord Commander Duncan finds his end at the hands of his friend and king, and in the flames that soon consume Summerhall. But death does not claim him as he suddenly finds himself back where it all began: the fateful trial of Seven in Ashford. But the man standing here, is not the young hedgeknight from long ago, this is the man who survived court and wars and loss. When he goes into that fight, the trial swiftly turns a different direction. And suddenly Duncan is confronted with changes, the aftereffects of the ritual, feelings he long believed dead, and the fact that he cannot meet Egg's eyes without thinking of Summerhall.

    Summary

“Dragons are neither male nor female, Barth saw the truth of that, but now one and now the other, as changeable as flame.” — A Feast for Crows, Chapter 35, Samwell IV.

“Come, Ser,” Baelor cuts in, clearly amused in spite of himself. “You must have heard the stories. It is true that I was born an Alpha, but I need not remain as such.”

Of course, Dunk has heard the stories of the Targaryens. There can’t be a child in all the seven kingdoms who hasn’t been told stories about how they not only wed brother to sister, but do so in spite of how they present. For a dragon is neither one thing nor the other, as the saying goes, and neither are their masters.
