If Shin-jae had the forethought to make a rulebook for her life up to this point, it would go something like this:
Rule number 2: when staring down the barrel of a gun, never look toward the things most precious to you.
(Rule number 1 of this rulebook would be, of course: never find yourself staring down the barrel of a gun in the first place.)
___
Or: Kang Shin-jae vs. Park Je-yeol, round 2.

Summary
A moment later, Ra-young receives a text—more specifically, a blurry photo of a table, with case notes and other assorted documents sprawled all over the surface and a single wine glass sitting at the corner, nearly empty. A hint of a finger obscures the top margin, but otherwise it looks like a perfectly innocuous photo of their hideout.
Or at least, it would be, were it not for the fact it’s 3:30 in the morning and Shin-jae is still working, for some incomprehensible reason.
_____
Or: Shin-jae has always been a terrible sleeper. This isn't going to change any time soon.

Summary
From this distance, it’s difficult to catalogue the minutiae of her facial expressions, but Ra-young has known this woman for over twenty years. She knows every wrinkle, every twitch of her eyebrow, every quirk at the corner of her mouth. The look in her eyes right now makes Ra-young feel like she’s staring at the girl she’d met in university, who couldn’t seem to believe she’d actually made a friend, let alone kept one.
Or: they've finally discovered the identity of a VIP user. Shin-jae takes it about as well as can be expected.

You’re going to live with Asriel, you decide. Maybe that will teach them to get along.
You won’t choose between your parents, and they won’t get to choose between you. If your family is going to split up, let it split up all the way. Your parents can be as far away from each other as they want, and you can be as far away from them as you want.
But not Asriel. Asriel is the one person you really can’t stand the thought of being apart from.

Summary
It doesn’t take long for the rumors to start.
The Fire Nation prides itself on its civilization. It isn’t like the other, lesser, nations who throw their children away by sending them into war. Those uncultured and unfeeling savages who are destroying their own future faster than the Fire Nation can save them from themselves.
Every Fire Nation child goes to school. They learn reading and writing, the illustrious history of their country, and what will be expected of them as proper, upstanding Fire Nation citizens. They are to be protected, because children are the future glory of the nation.
The crown prince is thirteen when his father burns his face in front of an audience of hundreds.

Bookmarker's Notes
Been meaning to bookmark this for literal years, truly one of THE BEST outsider POV things I have ever read for anything. It weaves such a rich tapestry of the world we didn't see, as if the camera shifted just a little bit to the left and showed us exactly what was happening out of the frame of the main show during and after Zuko's banishment. (It's also very cool to see the development of the OCs through all these shifting lenses! Extremely well written and skillfully executed)

Bookmarker's Notes
Caught up to chapter [redacted] at the time of writing this and I'm just. Head in hands. It was so well-crafted that I knew what was coming and it still hit like a train to the face. Truly the ORV AU of all ORV AUs...
Anyway if you have ever wanted to re-read ORV without actually re-reading ORV, if you have ever been caught in the agony of needing to experience a story like the one you just read but not ACTUALLY rereading that same one because you've already read it...please. Please join me here. It's got all the heart-gripping agonies and thrills of ORV on the backdrop of a really fun, rich, plot-driven original world with truly INCREDIBLE technical writing and character insight to boot. The story is so immersive I can almost feel paper between my fingers as I read it.
I don't know what else to say. But if there's any part of you that enjoyed the source material, you should definitely give this one a chance.

Summary
Heewon, the sword, has only ever known one king. Even as that king has abandoned her, again and again and again.
"Hey," she chokes out, nails scraping against the wall, and every part of her being burns, "Is it fun for you to keep throwing us away like this? Is it fun for you?!"

Apparently I never bookmarked this?? BIG MISTAKE PAST ME
Anyways went back to reread it and yes it IS that painfully, heartbreakingly good no matter how many times I read it. Would absolutely bulldoze through 300+ chapters of an insanely massive webnovel in approximately a week for the sole purpose of reading this fic again.

[Phoenix_Wright_head_in_hands.jpeg] This fic man...this fic.....
I've lost count of how many times I've read this, both start to finish and in pieces. Every single time I read it there are new lines I swear I've never read before that utterly gut me, or old lines I thought would be fine to read that STILL gut me. Absolutely not and will never be okay about this fic, and I mean that in the absolute best way. This is the most fun reading experience I've had in a long time, 10/10 would stay up until 2:00 A.M. on a work night to completely disintegrate in the comments again.
But slower next time, gotta savor it like fresh breadAlso, an utter MASTERCLASS in atmosphere, mood, pacing, and how to withhold information from your reader while also leaving enough breadcrumbs to come to the inevitable conclusion. On a re-read, everything single sentence is a total gut punch. Excellent fic for Halloween season. Highly recommend to anyone who has finished ORV, but from the comments it looks like even people who haven't read a single word of ORV have been able to appreciate the intense mood setting and potent emotions without context (but WITH CONTEXT, GOOD LORD. WITH CONTEXT IT'S AHHHHHHHHHHHHH anyway do yourself a favor and read ORV and then immediately read this okay. Trust me on this)

something something the endless march of grief and longing and acceptance and the inevitability of survival in the absence of anything else
also a masterclass in imagery and atmosphere and sentence pacing
