If he had, if he had done something to make Viktor see himself as who he was, and not what he could be… Maybe none of this had to happen.
But there was nothing he could do, no way for him to go back and change their fates. All he could do was be there in the moment, and keep taking a pickaxe to that shroud of detachment Viktor had tightly surrounded himself with, trying to pretend.
Trying to be more.
And so sometimes Jayce wept, and then he kept going, because that was the only choice he had.
For himself, and for Viktor, and for their child. He kept going, every day grabbing that metaphorical pickaxe on his way out, marching right up to that wall, and pick at it over and over and over again, before starting it all over the day to follow.
Over and over and over again.
