March gestured anxiously, waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Healy paused. “Ohhhhh. The nasty stuff. Whips and handcuffs. Girls and animals.”
“Close,” March said, grimacing. He really, really didn’t want to have to explain this. “Think more like…. Disco.”
“Disco?” Healy raised an eyebrow. “What, like the queer music? You think the back room of that store is full of porn for… For disco fans.” He nodded thoughtfully a couple of times. “And you’re an expert about this?”
For a second the whole world went white around the edges and March thought he might pass out. He was too sober for this conversation. What exactly had Healy noticed that morning, how obvious exactly had his full-body reaction to Healy’s hand on his neck been? “I was a happily married man!” March said, and as soon as it came out of his mouth he knew it was wrong. Too fast, too high-pitched, too loud.

Ilya is warm and solid in a way that Shane knows he hasn't been since last summer. There are still pieces of blankness in him that Shane will catch in the corner of his eye—Ilya staring off at a fixed point over breakfast, a missed laugh, a sudden silence here and there—but they are rapidly decreasing in frequency. I don't think I want to play hockey anymore.
Okay, Shane finally tells this truth. Okay, I hear you. It's killing you. I get it.

Six years later and Ilya has some answers, but not all of them. The more he learns about Shane Hollander, the more he realizes he doesn't know, cannot know, will never know. They name each other's truths. Shane names one now, back to Ilya and face under the water. "I love you." The thing Ilya cannot look at head on takes shape immediately, a flood of nebulous concepts solidifying. Shane's face, Shane's hands, Shane's laugh, Shane's voice. On the rink, off the rink, playing with and against each other, falling into bed. Things that are Shane without being him, physically. Sunlight through Ilya's cracked curtain. Summary
All the fans ever see of Shane is three twenty minute periods summing up the entirety of over twenty years of work. If he loses, when he loses, he will be the Montreal captain that lost to Boston in the semi finals. It won't matter that he was also the captain for back to back cup runs. And, if another twenty years passes and he and Ilya watch their jerseys get vaulted into the rafters as two people who are together instead of just standing side by side, there will always be at least one fan who will wonder if Shane let Ilya win.
Shane wants Ilya to win and he wants to beat him just as badly, and both truths are well worn stones in each of his pockets. Balanced. Shane has a feeling like dread and certainty and relief all together that he will not win the cup this year; he hopes he can still keep Ilya afterward.

It’s enough to make them all laugh, even if the heaviness in the air doesn’t quite dissipate, and come the next morning — Henley is gone.

Summary
It’s only because he’s waiting for it, hyper-focused on anything out of the ordinary, anything even the slightest bit off — that he catches it.
Daniel laughs in response to something Martín said, a half-funny joke about profiting off the clients they provide for — and his voice is slightly too breathy, his following remark slightly too slow. It’s nothing overly noticeable, but it’s there — and Merritt grinds his jaw shut as he turns the volume of the radio up and focuses.
It’s barely even there — only years of living with the man, despite the decade of distance between them all, have taught him how to recognise even the slightest differentiation. Daniel’s easy to read, once you get past the snappish remarks and dismissive arrogant air — his breathing is one of his biggest tells. He always speaks as though he’s about to run out of air in seconds, quick and rapid-fire and with an almost desperate undercurrent.
He doesn’t sound like that, now. He sounds wrong.

Not really, not to her and or to Alogar either, except in that sideways way that he sometimes talks about dangerous things; telling fantastical stories about something else entirely and letting you read between the lines. Which means Azune has lived something her father thinks that even telling her about is too risky, and Shadia cannot understand.
