In general, consider this something like a fourth route, where the substance (rather than simply the accident) of Shirou’s ideals are shown to be broken over and over, and yet he clings to them still, not in the managed embrace of UBW, but in the fullness of Fate's suicidal fanaticism, with a good bit more focus on the war qua the war rather than simply as a (very effective!) vehicle for character development.
