Summary
Before everything, Celidae’s favorite place was buried in Martin’s hair. Trapdoor spiders don’t move from their burrows much, content to stay in one place and let their prey come to them. It meant she didn’t need to cram herself into an insect daemon lanyard most of the time, instead watching things from Martin’s not inconsiderable height. So long as he didn’t go banging the top of his head on anything, Celidae was more than safe.
Peter hadn’t liked that.

What was he now? Surely his official title at the Institute no longer mattered. And like Elias said, calling himself the Archivist was a misnomer. Was he the Archives, nothing more than a collection of other people’s experiences?

Or, Martin gets a visitor in his dreams. Reliving the same 14 days of loneliness every night isn't as bad when you have company.

Ah. So, poetry, then. Disappointing. Well, it could still yield results. Jon obviously wasn’t hoping to get a piece of paper saying “I killed Gertrude,” but he was still looking for something concrete. He’d never been good at analyzing metaphor.

“Do you hear that?” Martin asks, hovering just behind Jon and looking down at Sandwich adoringly.
“Yes,” Jon says, because it would be hard not to. Sandwich purrs like the world is ending, like the earth falling out from beneath Jon’s feet, and he realizes—distantly, dimly—that he loves this cat.
Not more than the Admiral, as that is simply impossible, but he loves her nonetheless. He pulls his hand back, blinking slowly, watches as Sandwich blinks back. He glances at Martin, and says, “This is why I didn’t want to pet the cats.”
“Why? Because you’d like one?”
“Because I’ll like all of them.”
Martin laughs. “You’re the only person I know who’d say that like it’s a problem.”

Summary
Jon leaves Martin in the kitchen, watching the kettle, while he explores the rest of the safe house. Thick stone walls make it even smaller inside than it had seemed from the outside, and it doesn't take Jon long to realise there's only one bedroom, with only one bed.

Summary
It takes eight days of forced confinement for Jon to start hallucinating. He’d asked for this. Well, he’d suggested it as a counterproposal to being killed which is sort of a non-choice, but he’d gone along with it willingly. Handcuffed to the cot in document storage. Twice daily meals, twice daily written statements. Neither brings him much satisfaction. He thinks a lot about Elias in his prison cell, about the guards only keeping him alive for the potential of useful information. Two sides of the same coin, even now. Inextricable.
It’s Martin, though, that his exhausted brain conjures, because of course it’s Martin. After all this time, of course it’s Martin.
