Summary
Dean Winchester has hunted monsters his entire life. One rogue mage shouldn't be a problem. The bounty is generous. The job should be easy. Dean catches him on a cold night and thinks the hard part is over.
Castiel Novak doesn't expect mercy. He's made his peace with what's waiting for him in the capital. He hasn't made his peace with his failure at Carver's Hollow, but that's a different kind of sentence.
The road to Alderwatch is long. Long enough for Dean to start doubting everything he was sure of. He has hunted things that wanted to kill him, but he's never hunted anything that kept saving his life instead.

Summary
As a phlebotomist with the Red Cross, Castiel has donors, not patients, and given donation protocols spacing appointments out, it typically takes a year to call someone a regular. Castiel bonds with his coworkers instead, and he stays over with his best friend and godson almost as often as he goes home. There's little exciting in the day-to-day, but routine is no hardship.
A new part of that routine comes in the form of a talkative if nervous man named Dean, whose pulse races every time Castiel takes it. Dean often flushes and looks uncomfortable, although he covers it up with jokes, teasing, and a ready smile. It makes his consistent, fortnightly platelet donations all the more admirable, but for some reason, Dean only looks even more nervous whenever Castiel brings that up.

Two chairs on the balcony, and two closets in the bedroom. Two pillows, at least, on the two sides of the bed. A set of blue eyes, and two people—one not-person—figuring out what peace is supposed to feel like. He never dared to want it out loud. He never thought he could.
Magic wishing wells, he muses, watching Sam talking on the phone through the window. We’re down to the reruns.
