His head still throbbed dully from the impending hangover, but even tired and exhausted, his heart ached in a way he didn't think it was capable of any longer. Not after their return from China. Not after leaving Chris in that hotel room, taking the first taxi back to his apartment and drinking himself into a stupor with the memory of Chris's hands on his skin still fresh in his mind. But seeing Chris on that rooftop, the love-sick warmth in his brown eyes- it brought up emotions Leon had long-since attempted to bury.

Summary
Leon dances on the brink of consciousness, thoughts and sensations fading in and out as voices whisper somewhere to his left. He catches words here and there, hypoxia… refeeding syndrome…aspiration pneumonia…flight risk, things he might have understood at one point but now hold little meaning.
He blinks and the fluorescents above him sway. In his peripheral vision, he can see two blurry outlines, close enough that his hair stands on end. They're facing away, unaware of his wakefulness.
He lays frozen and tries to keep his heart steady, reciting each inhale and exhale like a prayer, observing them through it all. The beeping of a monitor quickens despite his attempts, and they turn to him, eyes wide and mouths open as they call his name.

The night lay still and silent as Leon pulled into his driveway, the porch light shining in sharp contrast to the oppressive dark. The faint glow of the living room peaked from the behind the blinds, a fortunate confirmation that Chris had made it home before him.
He twisted his keys out of the ignition, slumping back against his seat before gripping the wheel like a lifeline, desperate to have something to grasp in his trembling hands.

Leon rests his eyes as he sits in the open door of a BSAA van, head hanging low. He’s exhausted down to his very bones, pain and aches radiating from every muscle in his body.
He’s getting too old for this shit.
Heavy footsteps come closer, but Leon is more than happy to ignore them until a gruff, familiar voice accompanies them.
“Leon, there you are.”
Leon opens his pale blue eyes just as the man stops in front of him. Leon takes in the latter’s appearance, as it’s been a while since they last met.
Chris Redfield.
Leon huffs and smiles tiredly as he takes in the older man’s gruff features. “That should be my line. Chris Redfield, always fashionably late to the party. You missed out on all the fun,” says Leon with amusement.

Chris studies Leon’s expression. It stays carefully neutral, but it clashes with how tense his body grows.
“I said a lot of things. You’ll have to be more specific,” says Leon casually.
“How you were tired of fighting, how you didn’t see the point of it all,” says Chris, repeating Leon’s previous words.
Leon clicks his tongue and finally averts his baby blue eyes as he grimaces. “Forget I said that. I was drunk off my ass. It was the booze talking.”
Chris scoffs. “Leon, come on. Don’t bullshit me,” he says firmly.

Chris froze, staring at Leon disbelievingly. His brain rebooted entirely and he really, really wanted to throw back something… if not angry then at least something witty, but in the end all that he managed was a baffled “...do what now?”
