“I’m fine. Things are going well. I…” Glinda hesitated. She tried not to ever say anything too sappy to Elphaba, who never knew how to accept such things gracefully, but she couldn’t help it. “I miss you,” Glinda admitted softly. Again, the line went silent for a beat too long. Glinda opened her mouth to soften the admission, but before she could, Elphaba’s quiet voice filled her ear.
“I miss you, too.”
After graduation, Elphaba and Glinda find themselves in separate cities and therefore apart for the first time in years. They keep in contact through letters, phone calls, and occasional visits. When Elphaba won’t stop being elusive about how she’s faring after being cut off financially, Glinda worries a completely appropriate amount. (She tries to offer a completely appropriate amount of help, too.)

Dear whoever receives my letter,
When I was asked if I wanted to exchange letters with a complete stranger from Gillikin Country, I was quite excited. You see, whoever you are, I don’t have all that many friends. So, this seemed like a great opportunity.
Perhaps I should briefly introduce myself. My name is Elphaba, I’m 12 years old, and I live in Munchkinland. Before my sister was born, my family and I traveled through Quadling Country for a while, but I don’t remember all that much about it.
I have never been to Gillikin Country though. What is it like? Do you like living there?Personally, I’m not really a fan of Munchkinland. I have this image in my head that there is this place out there, somewhere in Oz, maybe even in Gillikin, where I’ll feel at home. But I haven’t lived anywhere else, so it’s not like I know.

Just like Sarima had said, Lady Elphaba’s skin was a deep green. Galinda thought that it might have been the most beautiful shade of green she had ever seen, and immediately shook the thought from her head. The rest of Elphaba’s face was beautiful too: her arched eyebrows, her vivid green eyes, her hard mouth-but her pretty lips were twisted into an expression of utter disdain. Clearly Lady Elphaba Thropp, with her ten thousand pounds a year and her manor house in Munchkinland, thought she was above country dances.
She didn’t look quite so beautiful with that look of condescension in her eyes. Not when she thought she was better than all of them just because she owned half of Munchkinland and had a townhouse in the Emerald City for the Season. It was a shame, really. If she hadn't been so disagreeable, she could have been one of those Eligible Heirs that Momsie was always going on about.
But even Galinda had to admit that was too much like a fairytale.

Elphaba ignored the Emerald City escort in her bright orange dress and equally orange hat and looked at Glinda instead, standing to the side of the stage in a pale pink dress with a beatific smile on her face. Glinda Upland, surprise winner of the 68th annual Hunger Games at fifteen years old-and now, at seventeen, her mentor. The person who was supposed to guide Elphaba through the pre game festivities and look out for her while she was in the Arena. The person who had once been closer to her than anyone else in the world, now worse than a stranger.
Elphaba tried to stifle a sigh. She really didn’t stand a chance.
Or: Elphaba and Glinda are both District 12's surprise Victors. But Elphaba is just beginning to realize the Games don't end when she leaves the Arena...
