Summary
Inej is a great fighter, but not as good as the taxidermist. Maybe if she hadn’t been taken by surprise. If she had had more time to understand his fighting style, to look for weaknesses, she might have had more of a chance. But her blades seem to bounce off him like he can’t feel any pain, and there’s only so many hits her body can take before she’s knocked to the ground.
OR
Inej gets dragged back to the Menagerie after the fight in episode 2. Her crows have to come rescue her.

Summary
Nina stands with a Suli acrobat on the deck of her ship, surveying a sea neither of them call home. Her skin still knows the touch of the icy water. She’s lost something since the last time she knew this sea, though, these waters: that core in her that refused to lay down and die, that fighting spirit. None of it feels quite real, save for Inej’s small hand clasped in hers.
“We were enemies,” Nina says hoarsely. “The first time I was here.”
Inej does not argue or speak back, only nods, lips drawn tight and solemn. She’s a good listener, Nina has always thought. They used to complement each other: the chatty flirt and her quiet, pious friend. That was before parem had taken Nina’s power, and grief had taken her wit, and piety had taken her Fjerdan from her. Now, the two of them make an uncomfortably silent pair.
After Nina takes Matthias' body to the ice, Inej gives her a lift home.
