I very carefully set the gun near the xenonite barrier. “Need a word. Fast moving projectile launcher. This is an object that can make small objects go very fast.”
Rocky gets close to the barrier and seems to be inspecting it with his sonar. “Unfamiliar with concept. How fast can objects move with launcher, question?”
“An object is made for the launcher. Cannot be any object. We call objects ‘bullets.’ We call launcher ‘gun.’ It uses gunpowder to make a small explosion, which is powder made from sulfur, potassium nitrate, and charcoal- Carbon. In high oxygen environments this creates a small explosion that propels the bullet forward at 100 meters a second.”
Rocky scurries back. I would too, but I have the business end facing away from me and the xenonite barrier. “Are objects in this launcher, question?”
“Yes, I do not know how to take them out.” I point to the end of the gun that houses the bullets. “In Earth’s atmosphere, they would be safe to remove. But in a high oxygen environment like the Hail Mary, I’m afraid of causing a spark that would make the bullets fire anyway.”

“If you had a 450ml water bottle, pure water, and it was room temperature, how much energy would it take to raise the temperature one degree?”
“Oh!” Deku’s eyes lit up. He knew this one from physics class. “It’ll take 4.186 watts!”
“Or one calorie, exactly. So in theory, if you could control the calories your body produced and aim it towards this 450ml bottle of water, one calorie would raise it one degree. If you had a 200 calorie sandwich, you could raise the water 200 degrees before you ran out of energy.”
Deku’s mind connected the dots before the researcher could finish. His eyes widened. “If my caloric intake hasn’t changed since I got my quirk, then the energy isn’t coming from the food I eat. So where is it coming from?”
The researcher grinned. “That’s exactly my research, Hero Deku. Why is there a sudden caloric energy being generated in humans spontaneously without a baseline energy source.”

Kudou let himself grin, showing all of his teeth.
“And we will never let you leave, anyway.”
Yoichi’s eyes narrowed, and he smiled back with just as many teeth.
“Good. I don’t intend on leaving.”

“A few years ago,” Izuku, his boy, chokes out. “A few years ago my dad was hurt really badly by a villain. He has always been a big part of my life. Unshakeable, really. A lot like you, All Might. He’s strong. But seeing him on the hospital bed with tubes and stuff hanging out of his stomach, it was scary.”
Izuku breaths out. “I thought to myself, ‘This is a person whose life is very important to me. Why would a villain do this to this man?’ and realized that that is what everyone thought about every single victim of any attack or disaster, ever. ‘This person is dear to me, how could someone do this?’ so,”
He looks up, those bright eyes shining under his wildly trimmed bangs that Toshinori trimmed just that morning in the sink before he went to school. “So I want to make a world where there are no villains and no more deaths, so nobody has to see their parents lay dying, unable to do anything. My dad is fine now, but when I see him struggle to eat, I curse the villain that injured him so horribly.”
“But I am quirkless.” His son says. “My dad is too. So I was wondering,”

“You ate some of it?” I ask, rudely. I’m too irate to mind my language. Who do they think they are? That meat is for Grace. In a way, that meat is Grace.
“Yes,” ♫♬♯♩♩♫ says. They and the rest of the human life support thrum know better than to be offended by my occasionally strange behaviour. “Obviously we weren’t going to risk the life of Honoured Grace on a completely untested technology.”
That doesn’t mean much. There’s a lot of things that are safe for ingestion by Eridians that would outright kill a human.
Trust Grace, I remind myself. He’ll have thought of all this.

Summary
The Eridian thrills a high sound that doesn’t get picked up by the translator which means that it has no clear meaning. Like when a human gasps or sucks in a deep breath. It actually sounds a little like that. When they notice that I’m staring straight at them they scramble back into their hiding spot and hold very still.
A child, I realize with a start.
That’s a child!
“Hey,” I call and the kid squeaks again. I was about to get to my feet but abort the movement and crawl closer on my hands and knees until I'm inches away from the xenonite wall. I wait and it takes me much too long to realize that they don’t have to peek around the corner to see if I’m still there.
“Hey there,” I try again, my voice low and calm. It’s my teacher voice, the one I use for shy and scared students.
Used.
The fact that I haven’t had to use it for years and it still comes to me automatically almost knocks the air out of my lungs but this is not about me, it’s about making sure the little pebble doesn’t die of fright from the scary alien. “Hi, I’m Grace. It’s alright, you don’t have to be scared.”
