Movement.
Her eyes lower. With a smile on her face – the guy was always so shy – she waved to the black and red hedgehog. Per usual, the poor boy was covered with what seemed to be dirt and grease.
Red eyes reached her own and they shared a brief moment. He nodded back. Small. But aware of her presence.
Silent.
Cautious.
But kind.
(As always.)
The front door of her neighbor's opened. 5:37 P.M. sharp. Her training weights glinted in the sunlight as she ensured to wave as well to the newcomer. "Good evening, Mister."
"Salutations, Miss," the elderly man greeted in that curiously, hesitated silence. Eventually, he changed targets. "Come in, son. We've set the table for you."
The door shut.
In the lead up to the War, everything felt normal-

The muffled sound of a phone ringing cuts Rouge's lament off. She huffs, feigning irritation at the offending noise, but looks at Shadow expectantly. Shadow grumbles, pulling the phone out of his quills and pressing answer, not bothering to look at the caller ID. Anyone calling him during working hours is very aware of the risks.
"You've reached Shadow," the dark hedgehog drones unenthusiastically. He hears some shuffling on the other side, followed by some deep breaths, then,
"Shadow-?" Tails' meek voice drifts through his speaker, almost too soft to catch. Shadow's previous annoyance disappears instantly as he recognises the kit's voice.

So when his phone starts incessantly beeping with message notifications, Shadow lets out a long-suffering groan, digging it out of his quills and bookmarking the page of the novel he had been so happily reading.
