Summary
Simon Aebischer has spent the last several years since being released from prison hiding from his past and quietly working toward his PhD. He has his lab, and his weird, fucked-up strand of mutated algae, and a promise he's made to himself to put something good back into the world after everything he's done. He's always assumed that "good" would take the form of meaningful contributions to marine botanical research that might, if he's lucky, do something to help their warming planet.
But then the planet stops warming. It starts to freeze. There's life in the universe besides humanity, and it's going to kill them.
Now there's a woman with red hair telling him he's going to be working on some kind of project. She tells him it's not optional, but he would've gladly gone anyways. He wants to do anything he can to help.
And anything to learn more about the kind-eyed microbiologist the woman dragged along with her to kidnap him from his lab.

Summary
There is not much these days that would surprise Ryland Grace, an expert on oceanic biology and one of the world's leading figures in marine genetics. Or so he thought, until his entire world is shaken by the biggest marine discovery in the past century; Merfolk are real. Or, to be precise, at least one of them is. Grace is looking right at him.
In all his life, Grace has never seen something, no, someone so breathtaking. He doubts he ever will again. Suddenly, he finds himself indescribably protective of this creature, this man, captive in front of him. The world is not ready to witness someone like him—nor could it ever deserve to.
Or about how Simon is a blood nymph and Grace is a little monster-loving freak first, and a scientist second.

Summary
The tow ship, along with its entire crew, is mysteriously flung deep into a dead zone after Simon miraculously appears on their ship. With no way to call for help, dwindling supplies, a single shitbox shuttle, and the most capable pilot the COI has ever seen suddenly re-available for further abuse, Captain Ava has to make the tough call and send Simon on a risky mission through space as their last hope.
A fix-it with severe consequences where I restore cut content from the movie, do some world-building with the Eden-COI culture split, expand on Cross the Wires guy's character, let Simon kick back a little bit, explore Ava, David, and Jack as characters, and then dissect Simon's head as he slowly succumbs to psychosis out in the ass crack of space. If you want to read about Simon doing absolutely nothing with suffering in between, this is your story.
AKA: guy with writing degree and 300+ pages of notes on Iron Lung after watching the the movie 20+ times, writes a "characterization bible". This is a self-inflicted writing challenge.

Summary
"There's no need to negotiate for your safety, Doctor Grace," Stratt says carefully. "I can assure you, after saving the world, you will be looked after."
"Um, no," he says, shaking his head. "I'm not negotiating for my safety." He steps aside. “I’m negotiating for theirs.”
They step into the light of the open doorway; Simon squinting hard against the vivid sun with his hand raised to shield his eyes, and Rocky, who chirps a casual "Hello, humans!" with a wave.
There’s a gasp; someone takes a step backward; one of the military personnel raises their rifle slightly before Stratt makes a sharp gesture for them to stand down.
Grace doesn’t have eyes for them - he only looks at Stratt.
And he decides, then and there, to replace the image of Stratt’s face sending him to his death, full of remorse and sadness, with the one in front of him: utter, complete disbelief.

Summary
After ramming the sub straight into the Light, Simon wakes up on a strange spaceship with no memory of how he got there. The state of the Hail Mary -spacious, clean, bright and comfortable- can only lead to one conclusion: Simon has somehow been picked up by one of the highest-ranking leaders of the C.O.I.
Luckily, Dr. Grace doesn't seem to recognize him, buying Simon enough time to hatch yet another desperate plan for survival before his identity is discovered. In the meantime, Simon tries his best to stay in the man's good graces (no pun intended), but he's hardly known for his charming personality.
Both of them are in for a bumpy ride.

Inspired by ctrl-shift-alt-9's posts on Tumblr: What if Simon was told more about the mission and actually given a chance to succeed, leading to his freedom. Especially since (even with the circumstances) he did a pretty good job piloting and navigating the SM-13. Understandably so, the post actually gives Simon a regular courier job, but sorry Simon, here you're going back in the Lung, full time.

Simon doesn't know why he asks. No, it's not okay. None of this is okay.
“Please,” he continues when Simon doesn't respond. “I-I need permission.”
Simon closes his eyes. It's his own type of silent defiance. If this man isn't just fucking with him – if he does, for some strange reason, feel bad or guilty about capturing him, then good. Let him drown in it.
Simon is captured by a compulsive liar who, bafflingly, gives him food, smiles at him, and pretends the Quiet Rapture never happened.
Grace saves the life of a violent human who seems to be under the terrifying delusion that every star and planet has disappeared without a trace.

Summary
Whatever happened here was bad. Irrevocably, inexplicably, inarticulably bad in a way that the most basal parts of his being wants nothing more than to escape from. But Grace can't turn away.
After encountering what appears to be a last hoo-ra emergency mission attempt from Earth caught up in the Hail Mary's wake, Grace and Rocky discover a single, severely injured human being quite literally encased in what Grace can only describe as a crime scene. A horror movie. And when he wakes up? He's mad. Really mad. Talking to the walls mad. Now they have to figure out just where he came from and why. Things are further complicated when all the newcomer (Simon, they learn) can talk about is missing planets, haunted oceans, and non-existent space stations. That and the really weird data they've been picking up on.
Maybe part of solving that is, much to Rocky's enthusiasm; both Grace and Simon slowly realizing how lonely they are.Series

Summary
Everything hurts. Not as much as it should, surely, a tingling numbness dampening the sharp and shredding pain even as it attempts to spread out through his entire body. It’s similar to one giant bruise getting pressed against a sharp edge.
OR
Grace really thought that his life had settled into something relatively normal and routine. It’s a good life, one that he likes. He gets to teach his kids, spend time with Rocky and Adrian, and go for walks on his simulated beach. So, of course, the universe has to throw him one last curveball right when he’s finally content.

Ch.14 excerpt:
"[Rocky] continued singing as the medicine slowly but surely took effect, waiting for [Simon] to fall still and, even then, continuing to hum and trill the way his own [parents] would when he was small and young. How he would curl up in their nest, protected by V (two) firm carapaces and lulled to sleep by their continuous purring and huffed notes. Biological instinct dictated that [Simon] was no different; an offspring in need of comfort, of safety. And [Rocky] couldn’t deny it as [Simon] relaxed against him, finally able to succumb to sleep now that he knew he was protected, the [ultrasound] he emitted falling quiet - a gentle calm after so much turbulence. [Rocky] had done well, had soothed and reassured; eased the fear [Simon] was leaking as easily as his own blood."

Still trying to save their respective planets, Grace and Rocky gain a new problem they need to solve: the body of impossible human being appearing in the Hail Mary's airlock. Things slowly get worse from there.
Or: It's not enough to want to live. You have to make a choice.

Summary
Ryland doesn't know where he is, what he's doing, or why he's doing it. Dan asked Herbert the same question again one night, playing with his fingers in bed. “Am I going to Hell?”
Herbert had sighed tiredly. They’d been over this. At this point, Dan should have made his peace; he’d either punish himself until the end of his days, or he’d set himself free. Herbert was sick of the attention afforded to this particular fallacy, anyway. And yet, that night, he chose a new answer.
“Who knows,” Herbert said, “but I’ll be there, too.”
He expected a spark of fear in Dan’s eyes, but instead, he saw only relief. Dan pressed Herbert’s hand to his mouth.
Now, 9 months later, sitting alone in the cold basement, just one floor below Dan and his perfect girlfriend, Herbert would like to change his answer.
