Summary
There are several things that the dwarves don't know about the hobbit that is traveling with them. Things that Bilbo is glad to let them find out for themselves along the way.
The first is that he's prepared for anything. His mother used to quiz him about what he'd do in any situation - from relatives to trolls - and Bilbo never disappointed her with his answers. Riding a pony all day gives him plenty of time to plan for everything.
The second is that he can throw a stone or any other small object hard enough to embed it several inches into a tree trunk. His accuracy is uncanny even by Shire standards. He's quite proud of it.
The third is that he doesn't actually say so many proverbs when at home but it seems to annoy the dwarves so he spends time thinking up all the ones he's heard before.
And last, hobbits scold like it is no one's business. The Dwarves he's traveling with really have no idea what will happen if they truly piss him off.

All he knew was that a strange boy in even stranger clothes had just been spat out by the sea, right onto his doorstep.
The second time was a much different affair.
OR, the two times Percy Jackson is sent to the past, and Odysseus's observations of a boy put through hell.

Summary
The second he heard the prayer, and the little offering of orange slices, he knew the child was his brothers son. A child that shouldn't exist. He was stunned. For a moment, all he knew was rage, and then he heard the prayer,
King Zeus, please give me the frame of mind to pass judgment fairly instead of acting with my fists first.
It was worded like a young child. It wasn't what his prayers were about, in this day in age, when he got them. It gave him pause.

Summary
Some days, most days, he is a full hobbit. Perhaps one who socialises less than hobbits naturally do, but then that has always been rather a preference of his, though he used to be better at enduring family obligations.
And other days, he’s not fine. Other days find him lying on the floor of his vestibule because his skin is wrong and the air is not breathable and he just realised that he can’t remember the first words Thorin ever said to him.
