    Summary

Wei Ying had to have a moment in the cold air outside. He rubbed his face. He felt like he should want to cry but he didn’t. He was probably in shock. He needed to see Lan Zhan. That’s what he’d do. There. Fixed. He pinged off a text checking whether he could come over and headed straight there, secure in the knowledge he’d say yes.

Wei Ying tries dating. It doesn't work out. In his infinite wisdom he knows the answer is to fake date his best most secure friend Lan Zhan. What could possibly go wrong?

“I don’t listen to gossip.” Lan Wangji said, firmly.

“Wangji.” His brother scolded. Lan Wangji felt the bite of his disapproval slice through his resolve.

“If I go -.” Wangji struggled to formulate the words. “It will be harder to argue -. If I don’t speak to him I don’t have to consider his proposition.”

Lan Xichen let go of his wrist, frowning. He smoothed his trousers. “Wangji.” He told him. “I know you think the world of your - plants -.” He waved his hand at Wangji, seemingly unable to complete a coherent sentence.

    “Mn.” Wangji said.

“But this man has some very - novel ideas about the animal kingdom. People are - excited.”

Wangji didn’t like the way Xichen emphasised ‘excited’. It made him feel - not excited. Annoyed. Frustrated that no one seemed to understand the value of persistent, dedicated, detailed study rather than ‘exciting’ and preposterous theories. Also, it infuriated him that everyone considered animals to be so much more exciting than plants. In terms of diversity the former was barely a patch on the latter. “His theories are ridiculous.” Was what he told his brother. “I am not strategic.” Lan Wangji told him.

Xichen smiled. “But I am. And I am your brother.”

“Well,” Lan Huan said. “How was it?’

Lan Zhan waved his hand. “Fine. No issues. He’s trying to impress some girl he wants to fuck, presumably. Thank you, brother, I now feel fulfilled in my career choices.”

Lan Huan raised an eyebrow. “We’ll see,” he said.

They certainly would, Lan Zhan thought. Wei Ying wasn’t going to last five minutes once Lan Zhan got going with him.

There are no words to describe the depth of feeling imbued in every stroke of the brush committed to the paper in Wei Wuxian’s absence. The letter speaks of devotion and regret, and love, most of all. It is in every character, every word. It rushes through him like a strike of lighting, leaving him tingling all the way down to his toes.

Left alone while Lan Wangji tends to his Chief Cultivator duties, Wei Wuxian finds a letter.

    Summary

There is something about grief that turns Lan Wangji numb. He cannot be certain if it is not some kind of defect inside him that makes him so. But just as he grieved his mother’s passing with dry eyes and a stone in his chest, so he grieves Wei Ying: quietly, frozen inside, without tears. Beyond the Jingshi window it might be spring, but Lan Wangji’s body and mind are still held within the winter’s grasp.

As the anniversary of his leaving seclusion approaches, Lan Wangji ponders the nature of grief and healing.
