Summary
Mike Wheeler is in shambles. He didn't realize that going to therapy would open up wounds that never healed. He hadn't realized that spending most of his adolescence fighting cosmic entities, and saving the World would be so traumatic. Even after all these years, here he was sitting on brightly colored couches crying his eyes out. After his first true heart felt session. His “Best friend” that he lost years ago reappears into his life. Mike has to make a decision: does he want to truly live his life or would he rather die a lonely man?

Will looks down at the sheet, fingers worrying the edge. “I thought we were being careful. Taking our time.”
Mike swallows. “I thought I was too.” He lets out a small, sad breath. “I was wrong.”
Will looks back up. “So what are you saying?”
Mike’s chest tightens. This is it. The place where he either steps back—or finally names the truth.
“I’m saying I need something to change,” he says. “Or I’m going to break.”
The words hang there, bare and undeniable.
Will’s eyes flicker. “I don’t know if I can give you what you’re asking for. Not yet.”
Mike nods. He’d known this answer was possible. Knowing doesn’t make it hurt less. It reminds him of the same words he said in that coffee shop three years ago.OR: A post-canon, slow-burn Byler story about growing up unevenly, loving at the wrong time, and finding your way back to each other once you’ve learned how to stay.

Summary
“Do you ever think about what it would be like to kiss your Mike?” Goth Mike's expression turns serious as he stares directly into Will’s eyes.
Will’s mouth quivers. “Uh- I- Um-”
Goth Mike waits patiently for his answer. Will steadies himself with a deep breath and gazes ahead. “I used to a lot." He shrugs. "I try not to anymore, because we’re just meant to be friends in our universe.” Will tries to say it as though he’s happily accepted the reality. It doesn’t hurt any less. “But… it still happens sometimes,” he whispers.
Goth Mike looks at him with pain behind his eyes. “Do you want to know what it’s like? Right now?”
OR
Will is swept off his feet by alternate versions of Mike while Mike fights for his life to face the question of why they aren't together.
