His blue hair lost its color, his bright eyes were muddied with cataracts, his once muscular frame atrophied with disuse. But for Soren, who had watched every wrinkle form on his face, who had found his first grey hair at the base of his scalp, who deepened the crow’s feet with every smile he brought out of him, this man couldn’t be anyone else.

She did not dare look at him at once. But she felt Kieran turn sharply toward her, and she smiled to herself, already able to imagine his face: the widened eyes, the sudden brightness, the hope too quick and too bare to be hidden. When at last she glanced his way, he was staring at her as if she had spoken a truth meant for him alone.
When Rolf disappears, the search becomes more than a rescue. For Kieran, it feels like a gift from fate, a chance to show Oscar that he can be more than noise and pride. But what Kieran offers as devotion, Oscar receives as danger, and in that fracture emerges a truth they both cannot name yet.
