Luke's current relationship was rocky, to say the least. It was toxic, blatantly obvious to absolutely everyone but the blonde. Things had gotten so bad that he was fighting with her in one way or another practically every day. Liz was even asking Michael if he could talk some sense into her son and his response was always "believe me, we're trying out best" because they were. All three of them were constantly pointing out the potholes Luke failed to see.
