Ilya barely listened to a word coming out of his lips, more focused on what was nestled inside of them.
His incisors, which should be elongated into full fangs like Ilya’s, were only slightly pointed. None of the other teeth had sharpened either, something no vampire could avoid when hungry. Ilya had only seen such teeth on a certain type of vampire, ones that would never have been left alone to cry in an alley while a strange vampire fed.
This vampire, this Shane, was a fledgling.

Hollander doesn’t chirp. He doesn’t argue. He doesn’t gloat about his second Stanley Cup. Instead he says, very calmly, “You can’t go to Russia this summer. You have to come to my cottage with me.” He sounds detached, almost.
Ilya wants to protest, but cuts himself off by retching. He doubles over, but nothing comes up. Now that he thinks about it, he can’t remember the last time he ate.
“When did this happen?” Hollander asks.
“I don’t know, okay?” Ilya says. “I started feeling – bad – earlier during awards -”
“No,” Hollander says. “When did you get bitten?”

Mama always tells him he’ll grow up big and strong one day, bigger than her. She always looks so happy saying it, so Ilya doesn’t tell her he hates the idea of growing bigger than Mama. How else will he tuck himself under her arm? How else will he rest his head in her lap? He doesn’t want to grow taller, or stronger, or bigger. He wants to stay this size forever, so Mama will hold him forever. He leans further into her side and Mama giggles. Ilya wishes he could melt into her so that they'll never be apart.
