For a mermaid, being banished from your pod is practically a death sentence. The waters are far too dangerous for one mermaid alone. Mermaids only survive by banding together.The worst predator of a lone mermaid, by far, is a siren. They're intelligent, strong, and love to play with their food. Luckily, they're solitary creatures, so in most cases they don't have the numbers to attack a pod of mermaids.
As a newly banished mermaid, this protection is not offered to Lin Ling whenever he encounters a siren.
His lucky stars are shining, though! The siren he encountered is clearly a bit of a fool, as he mistook him for another siren! Unluckily for Lin Ling, this siren wants to be his mate. How long can he keep up the act before Nice starts getting suspicious?

Summary
When Lin Ling was five years old, he told his grandmother he wanted to be a hero.
Oh, like a police officer? she asked, smoothing down the cowlicks at the back of his head.
No-no-no. Lin Ling jabbed his chubby toddler finger at the comic book spread out in front of him. He did it aggressively. To make a point. Because even at that age Lin Ling hated being misunderstood. Jab. Jab. Jab. Pointer finger hitting dead center on the page, blotting out the white-cloaked man shining brilliantly among a rising tide of shadows. Like this. Like him! A real hero!
It seemed so obvious to him back then. Heroes were good—full stop. They saved people; they stood up for the weak. They helped whoever and wherever they could. Everyone should’ve strived to be a hero, because really, what else could you possibly want to do with your life?
Now, at twenty-one, knee-deep in a heap of scrap metal, Lin Ling wipes a grease-stained hand over his forehead and thinks he should’ve applied for the police academy after all.
