“Do you remember what happened?” Wei Ying prompts, and then, when no response is forthcoming: “You were too stubborn to tell anyone you weren’t feeling well, and the evil doctor cut you open and took your appendix in revenge.”
“You’re a doctor?” Lan Zhan asks at last, speech slightly slurred.
A bolt of panic races through Wei Ying. “No, dummy,” he says, with a high, nervous laugh. “I’m your husband.”
