Zoey had always enjoyed putting things together.
From building Lego sets with her older brother in his room. To replacing car parts with her father on a Tuesday morning in July. To lazy evenings sat at the coffee table piecing together a jigsaw puzzle with her mom. There was a certain satisfaction Zoey found in going from a thousand splintered pieces to a finished product.
Huntrix is a fractured mess in the wake of Gwi-ma’s defeat. The tenuous relationship they’d started in the back third of the world tour was straining at the edges and threatening to buckle under the weight of their individual betrayals.
On the surface everything seemed fine - they were professionals after all. From the outside not a single hair or emotion was out of place. No faults to exploit, no fears to be shown.
But they were still cowards, still liars.

"C'mon Mir, where is it? Let me help." she murmurs, pressing her face close to Mira's so she can hear her.
"Back." she rasps, groaning as Rumi turns her gently to see.
Zoey finishes up with her demons. She's always liked to play with her food, but she seems to understand the severity of the situation well enough. She skids up to them at the base of the tree as Rumi rucks up Mira's top revealing the four nasty claw marks gouging her lower back. Zoey whistles lowly.
"This is gonna suck"
"Yeah" Rumi breaths.
Demons are venomous, the girls should probably talk, and Zoey's right. This is gonna suck.

Zoey has never talked much about her family.
Not because she doesn’t love them. Not because they’re complicated. Not because there’s anything to hide.
Exactly the opposite.
Every year, Zoey disappears for a weekend family gathering near Seoul, her parents flying in from Burbank, her grandparents already in the kitchen, her aunt and uncle hosting, her nieces and nephew waiting at the door. It’s loud, affectionate, ordinary in all the ways Rumi and Mira never got to have.
This year, they come with her.
Zoey thought she was protecting them by keeping that part of her life quiet. Instead, Rumi and Mira step into a house full of warmth, stories, children, and unconditional love and realize just how much of herself Zoey has been making smaller for their sake.

Zoey thinks, lying back against the paper covering of the cold examination table, while trying to ignore the sensation of inorganic equipment being lodged in places they had no god-given right to be, that this is, inarguably, the least sexy way to get knocked up.
Zoey isn’t really sure how she ended up here, in all honesty.
Well, she is. She can recount the steps chronologically. How Mira and Rumi had looked so god-damned defeated. How her big, stupid mouth had opened and volunteered, initially, and then had said yes to all of their concerned interrogations as to whether or not she was sure, like, really sure, one hundred per cent sure?
And now she’s said yes so many times and so adamantly that it isn’t as though she can suddenly back track and say, surprise! I am actually no longer willing to carry the baby you have been so desperately trying for because I think it would be a really super-duper bad idea! Sorry for getting your hopes up!
Zoey agrees to be a surrogate for a married Rumira. Things get messy because she's already in love with them, has known this for years, but she might be falling in love with the baby, too
