A Tarsus IV fic. Lots of hurt. Heavy on the comfort :)
_Sometimes he’s lost in dreams. Only, they don’t feel like dreams. There are no floating clouds or anything fluffy about them. Just ghosts Jim had convinced himself he’d exorcized years ago. Only, they’re not gone. They’re deep inside, like a lingering echo in the chambers of his heart. The fear he felt years ago is as present, vivid and soul-destroying as when he first experienced it.
Other times though, hands touch him, inspecting him. Gentle, yet probing. McCoy. The doctor is warm, solid and grounding. Sometimes Jim catches the tail end of a sickly-sweet southern drawl. There’s no “Damn it, Jim”. No harshness whatsoever. McCoy’s a good doctor, see, but an even better friend. He gets it. Knows it. He understands that Jim is already standing on the knife-edge of destruction. What Jim needs is gentleness, not a lecture about recklessness, and so that’s what he gets. Jim wants to dive into that honey voice and swim in it, but instead, he drowns in memories that arrive unbidden.

“Go to sleep, Jim,” McCoy urged quietly.
He closed his eyes obediently but refused to yield to sleep. He knew what waited in the darkness. He could already feel the grief welling upward and he needed to keep it at bay, keep his mind occupied with something else. But lying next to Bones, he felt himself begin to instinctively relax, muscles releasing their tension. Bones’ clean smell and the solid feel of him was like a soothing drug, lulling him deeper into repose.
He didn’t mean to fall asleep, but the exhaustion born of the past few days overpowered him and dragged him down, down, down…
