Daniel sees life like a river. Thinks he is caught up in a current that only goes one way, that will eventually sweep him out to sea. It’s easier for him to think so. It keeps him alive to think so.
He doesn’t know that he could stand up and reach the bottom. He doesn’t know he has a choice.
Drugs don’t work, sex doesn’t work, New York hasn’t worked. Somewhere in the Appalachian Mountains, an improbable number of suicides have taken place. Somewhere in a bar in New York, Daniel hears about them. He wants to fill a void. The difference between what is real and what isn’t matters as little to him as the things he’ll find to throw into the darkness. Which, as it turns out, is quite a lot.

“Quiet, Amadeo,” Marius says, and that gives Daniel one hell of a second wind.
“His name,” he says, because those will probably be his last words, and this seems like a worthy choice, “is not Amadeo. You asshole.”
And he spits on Marius, for good measure. Except he’s really banged up and weak, and it doesn’t even reach the guy’s shiny fucking shoes. Frankly, most of it lands on Daniel’s own lap. Oh well. He tried. Hopefully, when Armand tells the story — and he will live to tell it — he’ll make it more badass. He’s good at that: manipulating the narrative. He’ll tell Daniel’s story well.
Or: the working title of this fic was "Armand snuffs Marius hell yeah" -- bon apple tea, lads.

Armand huffed in amusement but let his thumb rest where it was. His eyes wandered restlessly over Daniel's face, as if he tried to study him, to find a reason why Daniel was broken like this.
“You’re a fascinating boy, Daniel Molloy", he then said and Daniel could only nod.

When Daniel followed the two pretty men out of the bar and back to their apartment, he hoped for drugs. Maybe a good story. Sex, of course, as it always was on the table with him.
What he got was high-quality drugs. A great story. Lots of sex. And an ancient vampire boyfriend with mutual possessive obsession for each other.
(A What if Armand would've went with Louis and Daniel back to Divisadero Street au that spiraled into long fic. Doesn't follow canon after the night at the bar at all, neither show nor book)

Summary
Daniel is sprawled out across the bed, loose-limbed and lazy, somehow filling all the open space it has to offer and leaving Armand to nestle into the gaps. His cheeks are flushed, blood pooling like it knows what comes next. Maybe it does. Armand was reading about classical conditioning the other day. About dogs who become accustomed to getting food when their handler rings a bell.
Perhaps Daniel is the dog, Armand’s teeth sharp bells reverberating in his veins. Or perhaps Armand is the dog, Daniel’s blood a song rattling in his ears. He has been a dog before. He runs his tongue along the bow of Daniel’s collarbone, gathers the salt-sweat there and imagines what it tastes like because Daniel does.
Armand remembers he loved Daniel, once, and that Daniel loved him. Or a version of them did, at least. It isn't his intention to go back to that, but it's not not his intention, either. Such is the prerogative of an immortal: to hold two contradicting desires simultaneously. If nothing else, it passes the time while he waits for this miserable interview to end.

“Babe, check this out,” he says as they’re knocking over a Cartier store in the middle of the night. (Armand had a hankering for some jewellery while out on the town, and Daniel is a gentleman, so he picked up a crowbar and obliged.)
Armand saunters over from where he’s been trying on pearls and peers at the engagement rings display case Daniel is beckoning him towards.
“Are we taking any of these?” Daniel asks — nice and smooth, nice and casual.
Armand graces the selection with a fleeting glance, then turns his nose up.
“Too gaudy,” he pronounces dismissively. “I cannot abide the current mania of studding everything with as many tiny gems as possible. Not to mention, these would be most unpleasant to the touch.”
The tape recorder lodged permanently in Daniel’s freshly renovated brain is whirring away, capturing every single word.
Or: Armand rekindles his love of jewellery; Daniel gets ideas.
