    Phoenix hums with acknowledgement and fully enters the flat, taking his shoes off by the door before he stops in his tracks at the sight of Hershel on the couch with the baby. Flora goes off to the kitchen.

    “Hello, dear.” He’s momentarily enraptured by the sight of his partner. In all of their visits to each other before, Phoenix had been dressed smartly. He’s wearing a dark gray hoodie now, with a teal beanie reading ‘papa’. He has stubble.

    By god is he gorgeous, and that isn’t the sleep deprivation talking.

    “Hey. So this is her?”

    Snapped back to his senses, he replies, “Indeed.” The professor adjusts himself as Phoenix sits beside him. “Phoenix, meet Miss Katrielle Layton.”

    “It’s just a cough.” Is what the man had said upon their initial meeting at the airport. Phoenix had hugged his friend without thinking, pulling him close to his chest and knocking the hat askew. He had pulled away immediately when Layton started coughing, nervous he’d accidentally crushed his ribs, but the older man just waved him off. He’s just a bit sick, and it’s not a big deal.

    And then a flower petal falls from his handkerchief when he’s bringing it back down to his pocket. A single bright yellow petal that flutters to the floor, and both men freeze.

    When leaving Labrynthia, he and Wright had been more than cordial, promising to stay in touch via letter or phone. And to Hershel’s credit, he did an excellent job at maintaining this particular friendship. The professor, historically, had difficulty with keeping in contact with those who he’s close with. If a person was out of sight, they were out of mind, and their relationship would fall to the wayside. If Hershel wasn’t so embarrassed for it to be considered an accomplishment, he might have celebrated his consistent responses to Mr. Wright’s letters.

    Hershel has never been particularly good on the feelings front. Not with others’, and certainly not with his own. It took quite some time to figure out what the fluttering in his heart signified.

    There’s a new mystery to solve in Los Angeles, and it’s to puzzle out why Mr. Wright is acting oddly towards him now.

    Some puzzles are so simple that one doesn’t even need to think before solving it. Small sacrifices for the sake of a long-distance relationship being one.

    Phoenix tended to work late into the evening, and Hershel would wake up early to teach, so it was only natural that the ideal time for a phone call would be somewhere around that time. A puzzle solved, even if the professor hadn’t always been such an early riser and the lawyer would typically want a minute to himself after a long day.
