He liked the lady, but he really wished he didn't have to see her. She was the last remnant of the rich man's promise, another promise broken by accidents out of their, and his, control.
He'd flown for the last time with his parents six months ago, soared through the air inside the circus tent he'd considered home. They promised to never leave him and they'd both left him in a puddle of bone and blood.
He'd had hope for the last time three months ago, when Mr. Wayne took him back to his fancy Manor, a home without wheels in one place, and enrolled him in school and promised to give him a new life. But he'd left him without a word, disappearing into the night in his armored suit and leaving him only fake words from strangers about being 'lost in time' and 'not dead, just - not here to handle this,' or whatever Mr. Wayne's kids stammered in their voicemails or passed along through social workers.
