By now, Mark had been through his tenth neighborhood, each interaction chipping away at his already dwindling hope. The sun had dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows that mirrored the despair twisting in his gut. He slumped down on the rooftop, knees pulled up to his chest, a single tear tracing a path down his pale cheek.
What was he supposed to do? No phone, no home, no familiar streets to guide him. He wasn't even sure he was in the right dimension anymore. Debbie couldn't be... gone. That couldn't be true. He had to be the one who was misplaced, not her. That portal must have dumped him in some alternate dimension, another messed-up version of Earth. And now he was stranded. Stuck.
