    The shivering figure in the cell corner had stopped screaming now that Natasha had stopped speaking to him, and instead was just shuffling himself helplessly into his corner. Shudders raced randomly over his body like electric shocks, making his half-twisted spine twitch under his skin.

    “What did he say?” Tony asked.

    Natasha closed her eyes. “Numbers. He was repeating numbers.”

    “What numbers?”

    “Three two five five seven zero three eight.”

    “Which means?”

    She opened her eyes, the green flashing.

    “What numbers would any prisoner be chanting? It’s a serial number, dumbass.”

    Tony already had Jarvis running the numbers through a military database, and before she had finished speaking, Jarvis had fed a name to him.

    Tony slipped his helmet down to stare blankly at Nat.

    “...It can’t really be him,” he said, as if hoping she’d agree and have a different, reasonable explanation. “He shouldn’t have survived that long.”

    “I know.”

    “He CAN’T have survived that long.”

    “Steve did,” she said softly.

    “How would you like to see the real thing, hm?” Bucky murmurs. “I’ll model for ya. Bare. We’ll make it like one of those fancy life drawin’ classes you’ve been dreamin’ about since forever. No charge, of course. Private session. Just you and me.”

    Steve’s brain short-circuits. “…are you serious?”

    Bucky tilts his head, one brow arching in a lazy, challenging way. “Why wouldn’t I be?”

    Steve’s throat works. “You’d really… just strip down? Right here? Let me look? Draw you like—like some kinda life model?”

    “Yeah. Right here. Right now.”

    Or

    Bucky volunteers to pose naked for Steve’s sketches. Decades later, one more drawing helps heal what HYDRA broke.

And sure, they always hurt and he keeps compulsively pulling his feathers out. And sure, he has to deal with Sam Wilson and his stupid normal wings constantly hanging around Steve. But it's fine. He's fine.

    Until one night, in a single act of violent remembering, he really, really isn't.

    The man tips his head and studies Steve. “If HYDRA has fallen, then I have no master. You could be my new master, since you have found me.”

    Steve jumps when a tentacle curls around his leg. He really should have been paying attention to those things.

    “Why me? Why not someone else?”

    “Because I choose you. Unless you’d rather I run around the world unchecked, doing whatever the monster inside of me pleases.”
