Summary
When the bombs fell and obliterated civilization, twelve nations organized around a last effort to save humanity from extinction by launching a space station into orbit. Four hundred years later, with dwindling oxygen, those still alive on the Ark send one hundred juvenile delinquents back to the ground.
Clarke Griffin, one of the hundred, lands in the radioactive ruins of what was once North America. There are dangers on every horizon: acid fog, mutated beasts, and personal vendettas challenging what it means to be human and survive. She steps up to help her people, to bring them home safely, but there is one problem: Lexa, the unyielding Commander of the twelve Grounder clans, has already carved out a brutal existence in this post-apocalyptic wasteland and she does not tolerate invaders.
Will these two leaders be able to look past their tribal divisions and help their people to thrive in unity? Or will their distrust place them both in the crushing grip of the Ice Queen, an oppressive force to the north? If either of them are to succeed, they will have to choose between survival or humanity and duty or love, for none of the dangers they face will ever be as great as the enemy that is inside of them.
