    Summary

Celine doesn’t know how to raise a child, let alone a half-demon one. She’s crap at warmth, worse at intimacy, and too often harsh with Rumi. But she knows how to cook, and she’s determined to shield Rumi and the other Huntrix girls from the idol industry’s coercive diet culture. She might not know how to love the way she should—but she can make sure her girls eat.

When Rumi was old enough to ask about her violet whorl of a birthmark, Celine stumbled through conversations she felt wholly unprepared for. She knew she was rough, knew her answers cut. She didn’t know any other way. But she steamed carrots and fried tofu and sliced fruit. She arranged lunch on Rumi’s plate so that the rice balls made a teddy bear and the apple slices looked like a sailboat.

Rumi grew with a healthy child’s appetite. When the girl reached, Celine slid the bowl closer. When the girl asked, Celine said yes. If the world outside would not have mercy, their home would.

Here, the noise of the world is gone. She can rest and think as she contemplates the makings of the world. To find Eternity, one must unravel everything else first. Only then can she quilt together a plan, a plot, an idea to undermine that which is known as the Heavenly Principles.

Ei struggles and learns how to deal with grief, and what Eternity truly means. Written for Eternity's Queendom, a Raiden Ei Zine.

Xiangling hunkers lower, hiding away, and her gaze flickers back to the creature. What could they want with it?

The panda’s foot falls to the ground with a heavy step, and with it comes a swell of glittering green. Dendro. She’s heard about this in books. Xiangling’s mouth falls open as light bubbles underneath the creature's feet, and with it, a leaf rises from the ground. Another step, and another leaf. And another.

Teyvat hasn’t seen a wild plant in centuries.

Xiangling finds an elder god out in the dry, dead, Liyue flatlands. Written for Circuit Noir, a Genshin Cyberpunk Zine.

Xiangling curses, biting at her thumb. “I can’t just leave you here. I can’t—” She can’t bring him home either. Her one mouth is already enough to feed, let alone the bedraggled patrons of her restaurant. The panda lets out a soft sound—and then Pyro curls from his mouth in a soft puff.

    Truly an adeptus then.

She pulls at her face, pinching her nose. “Archons, I’m going to regret this.” Her gaze falls onto the ground leading up to their hiding space. A trail of glittering green Dendro still glows softly, detailing his most recent footfalls. Beyond that, there’s a line of plants, green, fluttering things that catch the gentle breeze of the night.

    Summary

The Plane drones with a familiar silence. It has been silent for five-hundred years. The Traveler breaks this, too. “I don’t think you are being dishonest,” the Traveler tilts his head. “I think you are being different.”

Change: the enemy of eternity. Ei has slain many enemies, yet she can’t seem to kill ambition. Why?

Conceptually, ‘change’ and ‘eternity’ couldn’t be more incompatible. A static world has no tolerance for variables.

But even the perpetual Heavenly Principles are shadowed by the inevitability of erosion. Nothing is immune to change when change itself is eternally present.

(Or: Ei, Aether, and the eroding definition of ‘eternity.’)

And Yae was right when she said Ei was glad to see her again, right when she said eternity alone was too cruel a fate. The Traveler was right because he brought Inazuma’s ambition to the Plane, and Ei’s own desire brightened the sky with pastel pink. If the Plane reflects her inner world and now it looks happy... then ambition brings happiness, and Ei wants to be happy, and those hundreds of years in the Plane, centuries of loneliness... she had wanted that to change.

As the God of Wisdom, Nahida is ever-curious, and ten times as observant. It’s only natural for her to notice the odd, crooked way some gaps in Irminsul are filled in.

When Lumine enters the Sanctuary of Surasthana, she does so alone. This place has taken on a more homely quality since the youngest of the Seven earned her freedom. Stacks of books and scrolls spilling out over the new rugs on the floor; vines curling lovingly over the sides of the bridge, potted padisarahs in bloom; and Nahida, at the center of it all.

Nahida greets Lumine with a warm smile, and at her urging, Lumine plants herself wearily atop one of the cushions lining the space around a short table at the center of the room. Nahida hurries around, arranging cutlery and a pot of floral tea before her. Lumine would tell her it isn’t necessary, but Nahida always seems overly pleased at the prospect of playing host; fluttering around like a butterfly that’s eager to test its new wings.

Even I sometimes reminisce the carefree and happy days of the past. The warmth of the Knights, my friends, my father...
    Everything was perfect.
But one can never return to the past. I cannot keep on daydreaming for the sake of the future.
Or should I say, someone has to wake up to face the darkness before dawn so others can dream.
Logically you know there are some things you need to accept, yet emotionally it’s so much harder. I’m so torn...
Hope the business goes well. It’s a battlefield out there in the liquor business.

Now, Margaret knew she wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. But if her hunch was right, and that first line was referring to what she thought it was referring to, there was only one person who could’ve written this note.

Margaret’s eyes kept getting drawn to one particular line. Someone has to wake up to face the darkness before dawn so others can dream.

[…] Did this mean he didn’t have any dreams? Or was it that all his dreams were crushed on that fateful day? Either way, the way this was worded sounded like he was giving up even the possibility of dreaming for the sake of others. Perhaps it was some sense of self-righteousness, but this didn’t sit right in Margaret’s stomach. Mondstadt was the City of Freedom. That meant nobody should give up their freedom to dream, or anything, even if they did so willingly. The knowledge that the city’s hidden savior resigned himself to protect the city from the shadows, sacrificing… whatever he sacrificed to make that possible, made her apologize to him in her heart, even if it was meaningless.

    Summary

    “So it’s time travel?”

“No, not quite,” Albedo gently chews on his lower lip in contemplation on how to simplify the concept. “The Ley Lines hold memories of everything that has ever happened in the world. It appears that this Ley Line disorder has converged the past memories with our current memories.”

Kaeya cocks his head to the side, “So we’re currently in the past?”

“I suppose you could put it like that, but it’s more like our past and our present have collided.”

    “So, time travel?”

Albedo sighs, “Sure, let’s call it that.”

A growing string of disappearing people, a catastrophic Ley Line disorder, a chaotic space and a convoluted Fatui plot throws much of Mondstadt into a not-so-distant past, surrounded by uncomfortably familiar faces.

Unfortunately for Kaeya, this means forgoing a much-needed vacation to figure out what is actually going on, which is quite difficult when a certain Inspector keeps getting in the way.

And all the while grappling with the presence of a boy who looks and sounds like Diluc, but is someone far different than the man that Diluc has become.

Gods, he could really go for a drink right about now.

“Nymph didn’t mention specifics,” Albedo says as he continues to focus on the board, “but she believes that some of the senior Knights are trying to limit contact with us.”

Kaeya hums in contemplation—in part trying to analyse what Albedo said and in part trying to figure out what his next move should be. “Did she mention anything about the Inspector?”

If this really is the past, then the Inspector will be a nightmare to deal with. It took months for him and Jean to prove Eroch’s treachery, and longer still to convince Varka to take their accusations seriously. Varka had trusted Eroch for decades. They'd grown up together. Kaeya hadn't exactly envied Jean when she had to tell the Grand Master.

Kusanali stood before him, a little over half his height but managing to look quite a bit more intimidating thanks to her command of [this dreamscape]. She really was Rukkhadevata’s spitting image– she could be her younger sister. For a moment, his heart ached– but this was not Rukkhadevata. For all her awkwardness and tendency to get absorbed in things and the way she never seemed to quite know how to show her feelings, Rukkhadevata’s eyes, and heart, had been kind. Kusanali’s eyes were large, round, and dull. They scrutinized him with a clinical precision he found he very much did not like. “You are the Anemo Archon.”

“Barbatos,” he answered after a moment, giving her a short bow at the waist. “But please, call me Venti.”

She stared at him for several long seconds before she finally blinked. It was the first time he’d seen her do that. “I am called Kusanali.”

He sighed. “I’m afraid that I am, indeed, lost. The ley lines have whisked me to this land of yours without my say…”

“It would seem so,” the being agreed lightly. “Your arrival confused the winds, for a moment, but they welcome you all the same.” […] He looked at Kyryll with a tilt of his head, assessing. There was that thread of familiarity again, and finally, Kyryll placed it.

“You’re Barbatos,” he remembered. It… really has been so long… And the god of wind had only a visitor to the Tsar’s court, but he fit in with the fae all too well whenever he was around. It made for great entertainment all around. But those days were fuzzy with their distance.

Grown-up spies don’t make a face when they get a doll of the god who destroyed their homeland. They smile and tell the new parents how much they love it.

And then when said new parents are asleep, they take it out onto the balcony and put it on trial with only the stars, the moon, and one very grumpy bird to witness.

“Rex Lapis,” [Keqing] said to her toy gravely, “You stand her accused of…” destroying people and killing people and all sorts of other words the adults used. But she couldn’t say that. Even here, she didn’t know if her soon to be foster parents were sleeping or not. If they heard, even if she was Passing, surely, they would know she was Khaenriahn. But she couldn’t not punish Rex Lapis. “…of being mean.” The bird squawked as if offended. She hummed at it and continued anyway, “And having no handrails. Anywhere. That’s very dangerous. You are endangering the people. You are fined with…” she hummed again. “All the glowing amber rocks are mine now.”

She looked at the toy, laying there accepting her judgement. It needed something more. “And I’ll be better than you,” she said. “I’ll be better than you at everything.”

"Ironic that your name means rosary and you ended up becoming a nun," he says, "but... also ironic we bothered learning a word for a concept we would never need to write about." He turns his head to look at her, the sharp star of his pupil flashing in the light again, and she thinks there's something really ancient about him right now, something far older than either of them would ever live to be. You were of the air, certainly, but it was not your domain in the way of gods or lords until much later. No, you were barely even a thing of your own in those days, a single whisper in the chorus or a firefly in the night.

They didn’t pray to you at first, not the way one beseeches a god, but they would ask a friendly wind sprite for luck. They would smile when you danced around a bard who sang of freedom, and when you tried to bring them flowers. You were… a mascot, a charm, a promise of fortune and a hopeful future. They began to talk to you, eventually, began to believe there was a you, a proper you, that a person lived in this scrap of wind, and with their belief they made it true.

On the eighth day after his awakening, she visits him in person, finding him curled up on the divan like a pill bug. His hair spills over his face and shadows his eyes, but she can tell from the way his bare feet brace against the mattress beneath him that he’s awake. It makes the ball joints in his ankles, already visible through skin torn and pared down to the metaphorical bone, all the more prominent.

He doesn’t need to eat; Nahida brings him food anyway. He doesn’t move as she draws near, though she’s certain he hears her. In the dimness of the cell, the violet streaks in his hair seem almost to glow. Below them, the mitsudomoe symbol stamped into the back of his neck stands stark against his flesh—an indelible reminder of his artificiality.

She took Claudia up to the attic and showed her the grids and concentric circles, and the large nets at one window. She pointed out the different ways that the spells converted the unpleasantness, inverting the magic by copying its signatures and laying them backwards on the magic to convince it to be neutral again. She noted, too, the redundancies she'd built in to catch especially determined strains of it, and had Claudia watch as one piece snaked off from the main defenses and got stuck in those redundancies. She smiled at Claudia's gasp.

Then Claudia turned to her with shining eyes, her mind clearly alight with questions and curiosity. Querida grumbled inside at the way that look touched the one soft edge of her heart. Please, please let me learn and explore! it seemed to say. Please, I have so much I want to know! Variations of that look were what had gotten Querida through so many years as a teacher, before Mr. Chesney had come and it was only survival for so long.

Amestris was yet another place where Albedo did not belong. Albedo was a stranger to this world and its history. Albedo was an outsider here, like the Traveler had been.

(…) Mondstadt and Amestris could physically never meet. For Albedo to have one, the other had to be sacrificed. Equivalent exchange, one home for another.

Perhaps it was selfish of Albedo to wish he could have both.
