Summary
Jack stares at him. “I feel like you’ve skipped a few lines of script, brother. Why are you booking a hotel?”
“You said your friend is coming over,” Robby reminds him. “Look – I got it. Message received. I don’t mind crashing somewhere else for a few nights if it spares you telling all your army buddies that you’re dating a dude.”
Or: When Jack invites an old veteran friend to stay with them, it turns out Robby's vague worries about homophobia are only the tip of the iceberg.

Summary
“What,” Jack says, eyebrows raised, “no morning kiss for Dad?”
Robby shakes his head before pressing a kiss to the corner of his mouth, then full on his lips, then the other corner. An apology. Then, he bites Jack’s nose.
“Okay, okay,” he says, pulling back with a smile. “Now we’re even. Good morning, sunshine. It’s still raining, as I’m sure you can appreciate. It’s—” he turns slightly to peek at the alarm clock on his nightstand “—half past nine, the Lord’s day. I’ve already done a load of laundry and put everything of yours I could find, so I hope you don’t have a stash of dirty socks and underwear I’m unaware of, because if you do, then you’ll have to do another load later.”
Or, a slow morning in Robby, Jack and their daughter's life.

Summary
“Well, if you’ve never tried it, that’s all the more reason to come camping with me," Jack says. "It’s less than a two-hour drive, it’s great for hiking, and my tent fits two people.”
Robby looks amused. “Are you going to protect me from bears?”
“If I have to,” Jack says, which is better than the more inappropriate, if equally true, I would take a bullet for you. “So, is that a yes?”
Robby’s dark eyes dart, briefly, to the floor, then back up to meet Jack's gaze. “Do you really want me there?”
Or: Twelve hours after Robby leaves on his sabbatical, Jack’s phone buzzes with an incoming call. Jack spends the next few weeks bullying Robby into staying in his guest room, then staying in his tent, and then just staying, period.
