Summary
Vash, the fleet, is destroyed and their god stolen away. A new soul wakes up in a body that isn't his.
--
"Who are you?" You ask, scooting back until you're pressed against the wall. The cot you're sitting on creaks, wobbling slightly under your weight. "Where am I?"The alien makes a low, quiet chitter, her antennae twitching towards you as she slowly approaches.
"You're not from Vash's fleet. Were you with Her?"

Summary
It was like something had gently carried him over to this form, and while it should have felt new to be alive, he remembered everything it had been through. The way it had seen the world through too-clear vision and travelled on too-fluid limbs. He knew every inch of this body, the way it breathed and moved and talked, and he also knew that it wasn’t his own.

Summary
Tess raced toward Ironhill with lightning dancing on her skin and excitement sparking her heart.
She'd forgotten a lot about this place; she'd been taken so long ago. But she thought she recognized it. The broad strokes of it, at least. The hill swelled in front of her, enormous and rocky and ribboned with iron ore. Yep, that was the right geology. If it'd had a pointy peak instead of a flat plateau top, Tess would've called it a mountain! And the houses, she kind of remembered the houses. Stony and sturdy with holes for windows to let the fresh, free air in, and with wood-fed hearths.Or: after finally getting Sparked and leaving Asera, Tess reaches Ironhill and reunites with her family. Ironhill is welcoming and warm and everything a good home should be.
But her bed is kind of small. She loves her family, but not the daily toil of the family trades, and she struggles with attention span. She has an itch and a restlessness that’s hard to explain. She wants… something else. She just can't put her finger on what.

Summary
Leo still has no idea what’s going on here, but if they’re not going to hurt him then there’s absolutely nothing to stop him from screwing with these assholes. He can do ‘recalcitrant and obnoxious’ with the best of them, as any member of his family could tell you. At length. He’s not going to cooperate at all.
He leans against the wall and smirks up at the camera with his third-smarmiest smirk. “Aw, do I get a cookie if I help you with your widdle tests?”
“No.” The door on the other side of the room opens. “You get a tomato if you do this maze.”
“Ooh, tomato maze,” Leo says, and walks through the door immediately.

Summary
I think I will die soon, was what they were supposed to say. What they wanted to say. Yet, the words never left their lips.
They knew Mekh was studying them, as if sensing something they could not decipher. It was obvious from the way the Elder did not reply, did not push; obvious from how there were no footsteps and no rustling of clothes. Alef did not need to look to picture Mekh standing there, brows furrowed, their only eye scrutinising the Prince’s posture and what was visible of their face.

Summary
Alef can still recall the quiet evenings in Isle, the sun going down over the endless ocean and the streets below emptying slowly, colourful tents filling with laughter and lively chatting as the residents joined their friends and families for dinner. They remember melancholy in the air and fragments of ancient songs wafted by the gentle wind all the way to the Temple, replaced with bittersweet silence once they came to an end.

Summary
Daleth is afraid of being forgotten. Which, put this way, doesn’t really make any sense: they’re the most experienced and wise of all Elders, they’re the one others look up to, their advice is welcome and sought. There’s no reason for them to fear being forgotten, not really, not with the impact they have on the lives of so many people.
Still, Daleth wonders if it’ll be enough once they’re gone.

Summary
Would things have gone differently if they had been different? Would Alef still be around, would the Kingdom still be safe and sound? Would the two still be close if Daleth had been more pushy, or less pushy, or-
They do not know what they should have done differently. And not knowing it is far, far worse than knowing could ever be.
Daleth suddenly wants to be all by themself in their room, with no one to disturb them for a whole month or two. They could re-read all their favourite books, or sleep for days, or maybe reminisce about the old times and cry their eyes out. It would do them good.
Resh makes a funny sound and speaks again.
“No, you didn’t.”
_____
Daleth finds the King, maskless and scarred, sitting near the Temple one morning. They talk, or at least try to.

Summary
“Tell me, Nesting Guide,” the mothling says, rocking back and forth on a chair that is standing a little too close to the counter, “Who’s that in the painting that you keep staring at when you think you’re alone?”
Nesting Guide turns to look at the picture hanging above their working table. Their gaze lingers on it for some time, and they let out a quiet sigh. The carpenter isn’t even sure if it still makes sense to have the painting here in the workshop, after all this time, but they think they’ll never bring themself to take it away. For some reason, be it sentimentality or something else, they can’t.

Summary
“Do you think they’ll come back?” Sah muttered, running their fingers over the cracks in the brick wall, the surface barely rough against their gloved hand.
Mekh turned their head slowly; the first movement in the past hour. They had got used to sitting immobile, and the freedom their limbs had now didn’t feel entirely real. Didn’t feel necessary.
“Don’t ask me like I know.”

Summary
You can hear the birds chirping before you open your eyes, the pleasant song making a smile spread across your face. It is nice to wake up to it, day after day, morning after morning, to know there is something that never changes, no matter how much time passes. It is nice to go to sleep anticipating being greeted at dawn with the same merry song, the same morning routine, the same warm Good morning.
A cool autumn breeze carries a wave of salty air into the room and causes the curtain to flutter a bit, a shy little sound unsuccessfully trying to drown out the warbling of the feathered singer on the windowsill.

Summary
You have walked this very same path countless times, alone or accompanied, guiding or guided, stopping to look into the abyss or dashing by with your eyes closed. You have come to know these steep slopes, these narrow trails, these falling stones and these feeble flames peeking shyly out of age-old lanterns, cracks and dust covering what once were patterns and are now indiscernible shapes and lines, lost to time.
You don’t need to pay much attention to where you’re going: you remember the way too well to worry about it. It’s become your second home, in some twisted way.
So instead, you think.

Summary
The Pianist opens their eyes reluctantly and takes off their mask, trying to keep their hands steady. The light shaking must not have escaped the other’s attention, yet they choose not to speak of it. And the Pianist is grateful for their understanding, even if, deep inside, they feel like they do not deserve it.
“I’m sorry,” they say, faster than they intended, quieter than they wanted.

“Oh, you're the Prince!”
They have heard enough stories of the Prince — and the King they grew up to become. Legends of the Four Trials. Tales of past glory. Rumours of madness.
They ruled in Eye of Eden, a long time ago. It would make sense for them to have stayed here, like the Elders and the spirits who remained in their homelands even after their own passing. It would make sense for them to haunt the lonely mountain and the castle ruins, the shadow of the world they helped build only to see it destroyed.

Steward stands there, paralysed, unable to tear their eyes away from the sight in front of them as their phantom heart breaks in their hollow chest.
The village — the lovely, colourful village, filled with people who believe, despite everything, in a brighter future, who are ready to fight for it, who never give up and never break — the village is empty and dark and awfully quiet.

Summary
Samekh are incredible. They move with elegance and speak with confidence, always knowing what to do and what to say to make others like and respect them. Some of their skills rub off on Alef with each little smile directed at them, each minute spent in companionable silence or laughing along, and the Prince cannot imagine where they would be without them.
Alef admires Samekh.
At least for some time. At least to a certain extent.
