Summary
His eye is still swollen and his head still sore from the blow Keel had landed him. He understands in a vague kind of way why the man had hit him – to keep him out of the way, sedated and safe – but it has hurt his pride as much as it has his face, and now he is angry at a corpse.
Being angry at the dead is an especially infuriating feeling, he is coming to realise, because the dead remain blissfully unaware of the rage turned in their direction and so the anger has no place to go; instead it feeds on itself like a serpent eating its tail, growing fat and heavy in his chest and slithering wet tracks through the dirt on his face.
Character study, rated M for adult themes and one (fairly non-explicit) sex scene. Follows Vimes' relationship with his mother as he grows up, and the impact of grief and loss.Character death tag is for Vimes' mother and the canonical deaths in Night Watch.

“I just confessed to not being able to score,” said Ray. “That’s supposed to be embarrassing.”
“Personal relationships are not a game.”
Ray blew out a rueful–sounding breath. “You never heard of first base, second base, playing for both teams?”
“I’m broadly familiar with the metaphor,” Ben allowed.
