Captain Kirk Personal Log
Spock has been strange since he went to Vulcan. He came home two days ago, and has been distracted, unfocused, and eating very little. Anytime I try to address his behavior, he makes an excuse to leave the conversation. I know he’s hiding something, but it will come to the surface in a few days. I know Spock. He’ll talk eventually.
The small flat we share in San Francisco is starting to come together. I spent the time Spock was gone decorating the walls with our shared portraits and some new art I’ve discovered from some local artists. He actually seemed to enjoy it. I made sure to include a lot of moody paintings of the desert for him, to make him feel at home.
We plan on celebrating with a housewarming party with our friends from the Enterprise in a few days. It’s a celebration of the end of our five year mission, plus I’ll be officially promoted to Admiral Kirk before the party starts. I’m hoping that seeing our closest friends, especially Bones, will lift Spock’s spirit.

Starfleet has recovered from the Diviner's attack against them, and Vice Admiral Janeway has been tasked to negotiate a release of the Protostar crew on the Vau N'Akat homeworld, but she soon finds out that Chakotay is not among them. Even if she is able to find him, will she have the strength to finally address the fracture in their friendship after their return to Earth, or the seven years of chemistry that hung over them on the way home?!

Captain Janeway's orders are to capture the Maquis ship, they are pulled into the Delta Quadrant, and the two crews have to work together to get home after the destruction of the array. Except in this story, Kathryn Janeway is pregnant, and she's under orders to tell her first officer, Chakotay.

He wasn’t expecting this.
He’d been feeling an odd anxiety over coming back together again with all his Voyager family. In particular, he’d felt an odd ambivalence about finally seeing Kathryn again, out of uniform, out of the confines of their long professional relationship, with nothing between them anymore but the strangeness of their recent estrangement, and wondering what is to follow, what remains now they’d moved on.
He thought he'd contemplated all possible ways their meeting could go.
But he never expected this.

Summary
This started as a one-shot and developed into something more, exploring Chakotay's return post Ysida.
I always felt that Prodigy kind of ignored his mental state and what he had been through once he got rescued, so I wanted to provide an insight into his emotional state, while still making it fit into the show as 'missing scenes.'
This story is connected to "The Last Step in Fixing a Captain"2026 edit - added a chapter and updated some things in other chapters. I'm constantly doing small revisions and I'm sorry about that. But the main story structure is complete as I've deleted some things that made no sense or were redundant.

This story is a re-write of WorkForce (s7e16). The key differences are that Chakotay was captured along with the rest of the crew, so he’s on Quarra with no memories of Voyager, and Tom was never captured and he’s working his ass off (along with Harry, Neelix, and the Doctor) trying to save the crew.
