Shadow returned a moment later holding a lighter and the vase, only now it wasn’t empty; it held a bundle of light pink flowers that Shadow was fixing with his hand. He set it down gently on the table, catching Amy’s eye as she stared at him incredulously. “They were out of roses,” he stated, and Amy was astounded that he actually sounded sorry. “I didn’t really expect there to be any in stock with it being dinnertime on Valentine’s Day, but… I thought you might like these, too.” He looked worriedly down at her. “I hope you like peonies.”

After Shadow and Amy see a movie on their day out, Amy has an internal crisis and reevaluates their entire relationship. How could a hedgehog with such high, emotional intelligence end up like this? Well, even someone like Amy can end up as an oblivious idiot sometimes. Maybe Knuckles rubbed off on her.
