John drops his hand and, trembling, balls it into a fist.
I want you to know what really is, John. You’ll be beautiful broken, knowing what is and not what isn’t, Despair-the-Zero says, discordant in John’s head-ears-being. But where he is a mere irritation to John, the material world suffers: he gets off the wall, and there is a nicotine stain on the wall just the size and shape of him. You weren’t buying Marty’s kumbaya garbage. Kudos to you! But what you weren’t opening your mind to, if you will, he says, is that if the green guy was wrong, then who was right? With a single finger—claw—hook, he tips up John’s chin. And it’s none other than me.
