Summary
Jesse knows Petra is more than capable—if anyone can handle the wilderness, it’s her—but that doesn’t stop the endless loop of what-ifs running through her head.
But the thoughts don’t last for long. Suddenly, the sound of boots on dirt and dead leaves pulls Jesse’s attention from the campfire. There’s no doubt in her mind as to who it is. Thank goodness. She looks up, ready to greet Petra with a comment about her taking so long, but the sight she’s met with instantly makes her freeze.
