The door to Dazai’s apartment slammed behind him.
In the distance, out of the window, Dazai could see the setting sun. It kissed the horizon line, sending colors cascading through the clouds. It would’ve been a beautiful sight to die seeing, a quick step off a building with the sun’s dying light on his face. A peaceful end. More than Dazai deserved, to be sure.
But now was not the time for peace.
Then again, when was the last time Dazai Osamu had known peace?

Dazai’s lips twitch. “Doesn’t Chuuya have anything for me to bite on?”
Chuuya pauses despite himself. “…I thought that,” he starts, then stops. He clears his throat, eyes flicking briefly to the floor before coming back to Dazai’s face. “Because of Dostoyevsky. I thought maybe—”
Dazai waves one hand dismissively, the motion weak but sharp with irritation. “Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because that holier-than-thou demon’s been leaving me gagged for days, you think I wouldn’t want anything in my mouth.”
He grins when he says it. It’s a perfect imitation—angle of the mouth, familiar lilt—but his eyes are flat, glassy in a way that has nothing to do with humor. “I don’t,” he adds. Then, after a beat: “I also don’t want Chuuya to hear me scream.”
or: dazai gets kidnapped and tortured. chuuya gets him back, and realizes that care is just another kind of exposure. the kiss might be a mistake. or it might not. it’s also inevitable.

Dazai does not cry. Crying is for people, humans, more specifically. Dazai is neither one of those, for Dazai does not feel or think the way they do. He simply reacts in a way he sees fit. But is it normal for the tears to force their way out of his eyes? For there to be an aching in his chest he has never felt before?
He does not know, for time is moving too fast for him to react in the way he normally does.
He tries to speak but his voice is caught in his throat. How could it go so wrong? Dazai’s plans are immaculate, so how could it fail? How could he allow his partner to get injured to the point of near death? How could he?
How could it ever come to this? Dazai squeezes his eyes shut, the action serving to block out the horrible scene in front of him. He racks his brain for the memories, before they slam into him like a truck—
