Summary
Aether is, for a lack of better words, losing his shit.
The letter came this morning, nicely folded on the floor in front of the door of his room at Wangshu Inn. He found a blue Starconch next to it, an iridescent one with no visible imperfection, not a single dent. Aether had picked his fair share of Starconches and he knew for a fact that it was exceedingly rare to stumble upon such a beautiful one.
Maybe Xiao is simply very skilled at seashell picking. Or he spent the entire day – his birthday - picking them up and ended up choosing the nicest looking one. Then, he went back to his own room, picked up a sheet of this nice paper, and started writing the letter Aether currently has in his hands. Then he re-read it, deemed it was an appropriate letter to send to a “friend” and placed it in front of his door.
Aether frowns at the paper. Re-reads it a tenth time.
Then he lets out the biggest sigh he can muster, so full of frustration that Paimon looks up from the Starconch she’s currently holding in front of the sunlight at the window. This is the last straw. This is the moment everyone has been waiting for: the moment Aether snaps.

Summary
“Sorry. Tonight… I just want to rest.”
There is something reverent about the way Aether undresses him slowly, as if he is erasing the years from Xiao’s shoulders, piece by piece. He touches him and his hand says, “share with me your hurt, and I'll make it mine.”

“I like it when you do that.” Aether admits quietly.
Xiao wraps a strand around his thumb.
“And I like doing it. It’s beautiful.”
“You’re beautiful.”
Xiao sighs. “Aether—“
“Shh, Xiao,” Aether says, cradling his face. His fingers come up to sweep beneath Xiao’s eyes. They’re so gentle, they almost tickle, and Xiao melts into them, his eyes fluttering. “Just let me have this.”
Xiao cannot deny him anything.

The ever vigilant yaksha does not need to sleep. But sometimes, he desperately needs to, if only to rest freely for a time, and Aether is happy to assist him.
