Summary
She’s got a hat pulled down low– something that could pass as a thrift-store find or a modern attempt at vintage, but Natasha would bet otherwise– and her clothes are nondescript. Everything about her is utilitarian and sort of abstractly feminine; just enough personality not to catch the eye of someone looking for enemy agents, but nothing really memorable about her. She doesn’t even catch Sam’s attention, and he’s been hyper-alert to the point of paranoia ever since Project Insight. Natasha, though, wouldn’t pass her over in a crowd of hundreds, no matter what she wore– her face is too familiar.
“Secure a room,” Natasha murmurs, hand on Sam’s shoulder as she slips cash into his hand. He takes the litas, looks between Natasha and the woman, and nods. Then he disappears in the opposite direction.
Natasha drifts into the crowd, following from a few blocks behind until the woman disappears down an alley. Then she checks herself for tails, decides she’s not being tracked, and sprints to catch up. Before Steve and Sam, Natasha’s only worked comfortably with two partners: Clint– and the woman currently leaning against the alley wall like she’s been waiting for the Black Widow to arrive.

Carter’s smile was equally fake. “It seemed the least I could do. Even if I’m perfectly capable of taking care of myself.”
“That was what I was afraid of,” left Natasha’s mouth before she could think twice.
OR: A story that starts a little time after the Captain Carter-verse version of the Avengers movie and goes through exactly how Peggy got close enough to Natasha to know about her family. And maybe a little closer still.

Peggy asked over a disposable cup of tea, the exasperation in her tone for once not coming from the fact that there was something subtly unnatural about trying to drink hot liquid out of a plastic lid. Her gaze locked on Natasha Romanoff seated across the table from her, full of righteous challenge. "Who are you dating?"
The look Natasha gave being called on her game, skeptical and just a bit petulant, was gratifying.
"If you're so eager to find me a date," Peggy said, imperious, "then you'll have to find one for yourself as well."

She pointed a long finger at him, nail looking sharper than usual, and said heatedly, “Just because I’m in love with Galinda, it doesn’t mean I can’t be objective. The boundaries were sworn upon. Crope was the last one to touch the shuttle. That makes its Galinda’s point.”
Silence greeted her words, more than she expected, even if they did see sense in her judgment after all. Which, to be honest, she didn’t expect them to. Narrowing her eyes in suspicion, she looked at each of them in turn and was bewildered to see them all in some sort of state of shock.
