"Hold on, please," Phainon says, grabbing hold of Mydei's arm in desperation, trying to keep him on the bed.
Mydei doesn't listen. He pulls himself free, striding across the room to tear open the curtains obscuring the only window. Outside the window, he can see the source of the light that had blinded him:
There is no newborn sun of the new dawn. Instead, Kephale's Dawn Device still towers over Okhema. Below them, the city is eerily quiet.
This is Okhema frozen in time, its citizens gone. Even the birds have been silenced. An afterimage of the past, of time together they'd sacrificed in search of the new sunrise. None of this can be real—a beautiful dream crafted to deceive him, only one that is now fraying at its edges, showing the rot underneath.
"If this is the Era Nova, then where is the sun we were promised?" Mydei whispers under his breath.

Phainon giggled, and the fluttering sensation in Mydei’s stomach came back. Something seemed to click into place in his head; something he never realized before.
Why he looked forward to sparring with Phainon so much. Why he got so flustered when he teased. Why he couldn’t seem to take his eyes off of him.
He could be wrong. He’d never felt it before, but all the signs pointed toward romantic attraction. The realization hit him like a tidal wave. This wasn’t how this was supposed to go!
Mydei tried not to look at Phainon’s bright smile. He could only hope he was wrong.

“Are you lost?” Aglaea bends down so that she and Stella are eye to eye. She hesitates, then braces herself before asking, “Where are your parents?”
Aglaea watches as her eyes dim and her smile fades. Her chest feels heavy as little Stella sniffles, and suddenly she knows the answer. She almost doesn't want to believe it; Phainon and Mydeimos were two of the strongest people she knew.
However, the evidence speaks for itself. Aglaea’s threads take in Stella’s state, and she concludes that as long as Phainon and Mydei were able, they would never leave their daughter in this terrible state.
“Daddy and Papa are gone,” she whispers miserably, and Aglaea feels dizzy actually hearing it confirmed. “And… and they said that if they were, I should go look for Auntie Aglaea in Okhema because she’d take care of me.”

All three pairs of eyes at the table stared at him. Clearly, they seemed to have thought the opposite.

Prince Mydeimos of Castrumn Kremnos and Khaslana of Aedes Elysiae.
Two figures that classicists debated over for centuries.
Partners in crime. Heroes in the Elysian war. Bound by loyalty…
…or something that history refused to name.
Just like Patroclus and Achillies.
Just like Alexander and Hephaestion.
And just like Gilgamesh and Enkidu.
They learned about the prince and his knight in Professor Anaxagoras’ “Classic Amphorean History and its Heroes” class. Mydei loved the class because it taught him more about his Kremnoan heritage, and Phainon loved the class because it had Mydei.
He would do anything for Mydei. Even if it was helping him translate a strange, ancient book written entirely in the dead language.
Even if it was accidentally resurrecting the two heroes for a night.He had known he loved Mydei long before the night they accidentally brought Mydeimos and Khaslana back to life momentarily.
What he had not known was how much the past would reflect the present, how dangerous it was to see yourself in a story that ended tragically, or how attractive his roommate would look in ancient Kremnoan garments (or rather, the lack-thereof.)

Mydei doesn't think much of it when his class is one minute late.
But as the clock on his wall ticks away, signalling that now—after losing himself in deep thought over how to handle today's lesson—it's currently ten past the hour, he finally starts getting suspicious. It's normal for classes to overrun on occasion, gods, even he's even done it before. However, it's an entirely different thing when it's this much time that's gone by without any prior notice. Mydei pushes his glasses back up onto the bridge of his nose, as they've gradually slid down while he was staring at the worksheets on his desk.
He sighs, glancing at the clock once again. Two more minutes, he promises himself, and then he'll go figure out where the hells his class has disappeared off to.

It was a fruitless question. No matter how hard Khaslana searched within, he couldn't find a single wish spawned from his own desire. However, as an old friend, the swordsman supposed... he could humour her with a simple confession.

His eyes never left Phainon’s face, memorizing every line, every shadow, every beloved detail as though carving it into his soul.
Between each word, he kissed Phainon’s knuckles again and again, desperate to convey what fate denied them—that he wanted this devotion in their lifetime too, but prophecy had already stolen that chance. “When death finally takes me away from you,” he repeated softly, lips brushing skin, “I will hold you with my other hand… and promise to find you in that new tomorrow you will deliver us to.”

He debates leaving a note about his departure, but, ultimately, decides against it.
No one will miss him. Who could miss a man who was only a mask?He's fulfilled his purpose here, and now it's time for him to leave.
Phainon is tired. He's spent a lifetime living a lie, playing the role of fate, and now that the mask has fallen away,there's nothing left to save.
So, Phainon leaves before Entry Hour and he does not look back.

Summary
Mydei's luscious golden hair had grown longer over the course of the last few months where they're so busy finishing up assignments and studying for final exams, so Phainon sighed and took out the hair band that he recently wore on his wrist then tapped Mydei's shoulder to show the hair band.
Mydei easily acquiesced, turning his head on the side so Phainon could gather some of the soft hair to tie it into a small bun with practised ease.
The sound of a loud clink jolted Phainon and he turned to see everyone gaped at him, including Eurypon and Gorgo.
Phainon opened his mouth to ask, but Gorgo had interrupted him, "Mydeimos, why haven't you told us that your relationship has progressed this far?"
Phainon stared at her in confusion, then to Mydei who avoided looking at him but whose cheeks have reddened.
Gorgo had stood up, "We are here today to celebrate the day that Mydeimos had found an alpha befitting of him. May Mydeimos and Phainon be blessed with happiness from here on, standing strong together until death."
He had to look panicked, so Mydei hissed, "I'll explain later. Just follow it for now."
"Thank you, mother."
Then he drank the juice in one gulp.
